After a lethargic start to the season, Alabama football has begun to kick into gear on offense. New faces have developed roles for themselves in the offense and could make an impact this week against Georgia.
The team averaged 518.5 total yards of offense across its wins over Louisiana-Monroe and Wisconsin. Quarterback Ty Simpson has begun to find rhythm under center, completing 41 of his last 46 passes for 608 yards and seven touchdowns.
“He’s really slowed the game down,” Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer said. “He’s staying more disciplined with just where his reads are taking him, and not being in a hurry, and then keeping his eyes downfield and trusting the offensive line, even when he’s gotta hang in there.”
New faces have also begun to develop roles in the offense. Running back Kevin Riley, wide receiver Lotzeir Brooks and offensive lineman Michael Carroll have made an impact and could continue to see increased playing time against the Bulldogs in the SEC opener.
Riley has averaged 5.2 yards per carry and has accounted for 197 total yards. His versatility earned him a start in the Crimson Tide’s home opener, where he accounted for 114 total yards and averaged 6.3 yards per carry.
With running back Jam Miller expected to return for the Georgia game, Riley’s production may dip. However, his big-play capability and abilities as a receiving back may earn him consistent reps as the No. 2 back.
In March, DeBoer called Riley the team’s “shiftiest” running back and added that he is one of the most explosive players on its roster.
Brooks and Carroll, both true freshmen, have had to work hard to earn the snaps they’ve played. Both are competing for opportunities in talent-filled position rooms, with Carroll in a two-horse race for the starting right tackle spot with Wilkin Formby.
“He hates being with the twos as anybody would,” Proctor said of Carroll. “I know that’s how I was, too. And I see he’s trying to do the things to change that and never be on the twos.”
Brooks will likely continue to see opportunities due to his dynamic abilities, as he has averaged 14.7 yards per catch.
Alabama football will open SEC play in Athens, Georgia, to face off against the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday. The game is scheduled to kick off at 6:30 p.m. CT and can be streamed on ABC.
