In many households, chicken might be the most frequently-cooked main dish for weeknight dinners. In my house, it's pasta. All year-round we are boiling water to make that delicious carb. It's there in the middle of winter, keeping us warm with a bowl of cheesy baked ziti or bolognese, and it's there in summer, dressed in a basil pesto with some fresh tomatoes.

The beauty of pasta is its ability to shapeshift with the seasons. It's hearty and comforting when you need it, bright and breezy when you don't. In fall, we're all about butternut squash ravioli with a brown butter sauce that tastes like a hug in carb form. Spring calls for something fresh and green, maybe penne tossed with lemon, asparagus and a sprinkle of parmesan. You can dress it up for company, keep it simple for weeknights, or go full "leftovers pasta" and toss in veggies you need to use up. The world is your oyster.

Since I'm taking a short-cut by using dry pasta noodles, I do usually try to at least make a homemade sauce to go with it. However, sometimes there's a store-bought sauce that's just too delicious to resist. Case in point: Williams Sonoma's Pumpkin Pesto. It's literally fall in a jar. Now, admittedly, at $12.95 for an 11.3-ounce jar, this is a special occasion purchase in my house. But it really is a must-buy every fall because it's just so good.

Pumpkin Pesto, $12.95 at Williams Sonoma

The pesto is made in Italy with pumpkin, pecorino cheese, Parmigiano-Reggiano, pine nuts and some warm spices to bring in that autumnal feel.

How Do You Use Pumpkin Pesto?

You can use pumpkin pesto the exact same way you'd use basil pesto. It works great with any pesto, but can also be used as a dip for flat bread, as a pizza topping (ooooh, maybe Thanksgiving pizza?) and bruschetta. Basically anywhere you need a sauce that feels like fall, pumpkin pesto can be your go-to.

If you know you want more than one jar, Williams Sonoma does sell their Pumpkin Pesto in a two-pack, however you won't be saving any money. The two-pack costs $25.90, which is exactly the same as buying two individual jars at $12.95 apiece. The good news is that if you don't get to that second jar of pesto this fall, unopened jars keep for 24 months at room temperature in the pantry. Just know that if you do crack open a jar, it needs to be refrigerated and consumed within 3 days.
