First Alert Weather: Dry weather sticks around for the rest of the weekend with warmth building on Sunday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — In the Rochester area, Saturday’s high temperatures stayed in the mid to upper 60s while the Southern Tier saw temperatures in the mid to high 70s. The rest of Saturday will be dry and cool with dew points not coming out of the low 40s, as cool and dry air aloft continues to move into the area.

Skies will stay mostly clear heading into the evening despite some upper-level clouds moving in from an approaching system.  Low temperatures Saturday night will reach 49 degrees and into the mid-40s for higher elevation.

Despite being cool, these low temperatures are expected to stay a little milder than Friday night’s lows due to increasing cloud cover. Winds will stay out of the south at 8-13 mph. The moderate wind speeds at the surface and drier air should suppress significant radiation fog formation moving into Sunday morning. However, valley areas may see some light fog.

Sunday temperatures will start out in the upper 50s with cloudy skies sticking around for most of the day. A shortwave trough in the mid-levels of the atmosphere will cross Western New York in the afternoon on Sunday and will give a small boost in warmth and a little humidity before the main system arrives. This increase in moisture and warmth will lead to precipitation chances at 10% as a sprinkle cannot be ruled out. However, you can expect Sunday to be predominantly dry.

Though some model discrepancy is seen between the NAM 3k and HRRR for Sunday’s high temperature, highs will likely reach 82 degrees, with both models trending up for Sunday’s high temperatures. Surface winds will continue to stay out of the south at 10-15 mph. After some evening clearing, lower-level clouds build again overnight Sunday as the approaching low’s warm sector moves into the region.

Moisture advection continues to build overnight on Sunday into early Monday morning with dew points approaching the upper 50s, and even the 60s by daytime on Monday. This will bring the chance for some rain showers overnight with rain totals estimated 0.10 inches in eastern Monroe County and west into Genesee, Orleans, Erie and Niagara Counties. As a result of this moisture and warm front moving in, Sunday night lows will stay mild around 58 degrees.
