Things went from bad to downright awful for the Clemson Tigers on Saturday afternoon, as they dropped their third game of the early season at home against the Syracuse Orange by a final score of 34-21.
It’s hard to find very many “must-win” games during Week 4 of any given campaign, but there was really no other way to describe this matchup for both Clemson and its long-time head coach, Dabo Swinney.
Swinney made headlines earlier in the week for his impassioned response to fans and media members who had begun to question whether or not the game had passed him by after last weekend’s devastating loss to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, challenging them to find another coach who could replicate the immense success he’s had over the past decade.
Swinney also formed the narrative that the 1-2 start could be the best thing that ever happened to the program, and that he believed that they would rebound. According to ESPN commentator Bob Wischusen, that narrative has gone “out the window” in the wake of this most recent letdown for the Tigers.
“Dabo Swinney told us it’s all a mindset,” Wischusen said during the waning moments of the Tigers’ loss to the Orange. “He was in his press conferences defending the history and the winning of this program, and that is undeniable. He said ‘Who knows? Maybe this will be the best thing that has ever happened to us.’ Well, that narrative is now out the window. What’s going to be the next narrative from the head coach?”
