HENRIETTA, N.Y. — A community fundraiser is being held for 36 hours to support a boy from Newark who was recently involved in a BMX bike race accident.
Tanner LaMagna recently broke his neck in a BMX bike race in Jamestown, N.Y. on July 13. He is now at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta for rehabilitation.
Starting at 6 a.m. Saturday morning until 6 p.m. Sunday, people can stop by Synthesis Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) in Henrietta to bid on raffle baskets donated by various local businesses, make a donation, and participate in BJJ activities, wrestling, and grappling.
Casey Lamb, one of the owners of Synthesis, says all of the proceeds will be going to Tanner and his family. He also says various martial arts schools from across the country have made donations, and schools from Buffalo, Syracuse, Auburn, Ithaca, and more have come out to their support.
“It’s great that the community is coming together to rally behind him,” said Lamb.
Tanner’s dad, Dave LaMagna, has been training at Synthesis, and has also taught at Faust’s USA Karate in Fairport for about 13 years. Kathy Faust from Faust’s USA Karate, who helped organize the fundraiser with Lamb, says that Tanner also trained BJJ at their gym.
“We want to help him in anyway and everyway that we can help him and his family,” said Faust. “They’re great people and we appreciate that they’re a part of us.”
