After three consecutive losses to start their series with the Toledo Mud Hens, the Iowa Cubs bounced back with a 1-0 win on Friday night.
Walker Powell got the start for Iowa and put in six scoreless innings of work, allowing just three hits for his outing and striking out five Mud Hens without registering a walk. Ryan Brasier and Ethan Roberts took it from there out of the bullpen and shut the door on Toledo. Impressively, Iowa’s pitching did not walk a batter all night.
As for the offense, Iowa had just five hits on the evening, but two of them came late in the bottom of the eighth when they needed them most. After Parker Chavers and Rafael Morel led off the inning with a pair of groundouts, Hayden Cantrelle dropped in a two-out single to give Iowa a baserunner. Then, up came Nicky Lopez, who drove an RBI triple into the gap in right-center. Cantrelle came around to score, and the Cubs took the first and only lead of the game, 1-0, which is how the game would end.
