ICC brutally punishes Rashid Khans 2 Afghanistan teammates after Asia Cup 2025 disaster

Afghanistan spinners Noor Ahmad and Mujeeb Ur Rehman have been fined by the ICC and have been booked under sanctions due to their offences in the Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka match in the Asia Cup. Their team faced a crushing defeat to the former Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka, and were knocked out of the Asia Cup.

The Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka contest from Group B was undoubtedly one of the most gripping matches in this edition of the Asia Cup. Despite giving their all, the Afghanistan bowlers could not restrict the Lankans from chasing down the target, which led to a crashing exit for the World Cup semi-finalists.

Afghan spin duo Noor Ahmad, the left-arm spinner, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, the off-spinner, have been fined for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the Asia Cup match against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi.

While Noor was found to have breached Article 2.8, which indicated showing dissent at “showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match”, Mujeeb has been charged with breaching Article 2.2, which relates to "abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match."

In addition to this, one demerit point has also been added to both players' disciplinary records, citing that this was their first offence in the last 24-month period.

What act led to the sanction on the Afghanistan spinners?

The off-spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who featured as the third spinner in the Afghanistan attack, had broken the stumps with his towel during the course of the game. This was marked as an act of vandalism towards cricket equipment.

On the other hand, the CSK spinner Noor Ahmad, who was part of Afghanistan's team for all the matches in the competition, showed dissent in the 16th over against the umpire's decision as he adjudged one of the deliveries to be a wide.

Both players admitted their offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, so there was no need for formal hearings.
