Afghan spin duo Noor Ahmad, the left-arm spinner, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, the off-spinner, have been fined for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the Asia Cup match against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi.
While Noor was found to have breached Article 2.8, which indicated showing dissent at “showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match”, Mujeeb has been charged with breaching Article 2.2, which relates to "abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match."
In addition to this, one demerit point has also been added to both players' disciplinary records, citing that this was their first offence in the last 24-month period.
What act led to the sanction on the Afghanistan spinners?
The off-spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who featured as the third spinner in the Afghanistan attack, had broken the stumps with his towel during the course of the game. This was marked as an act of vandalism towards cricket equipment.
On the other hand, the CSK spinner Noor Ahmad, who was part of Afghanistan's team for all the matches in the competition, showed dissent in the 16th over against the umpire's decision as he adjudged one of the deliveries to be a wide.
Both players admitted their offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, so there was no need for formal hearings.
