Stoddard Funeral Home and Sunset Memorial Gardens will host an event next weekend in Greeley to honor Gold Star families.
The event will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28 at Stoddard Funeral Home, 3205 W. 28th St., and will feature a proclamation from Mayor John Gates and other city staff, according to an email from Killed in Action Memorial project coordinator and former Greeley city council member Don Feldhaus.
A Gold Star family is a family that had an immediate family member die as a result of active-duty military service, according to America’s Gold Star Families.
Gold Star Mother’s and Family Day is the last Sunday of every September. It began in 1936 as Gold Star Mother’s Day but was amended to include all immediate family members in 2011.
Weld County has had 228 residents killed in action since statehood and county incorporation. The first casualty came in 1898 as part of the Spanish American War, Feldhaus said.
Residents can see all of Weld County’s own killed in action at the Weld County Veterans Memorial at the southeast corner of Bittersweet Park.
All the names are listed on the east face of the monument honoring Joe P. Martinez, a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient.
