The MiG-31 aircraft remained there for 12 minutes before being intercepted by Italian jets.
Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal said his country would request Nato Article 4 consultations over a violation of its airspace by Russian fighter jets.
“Russia has violated Estonian airspace four times already this year, which is unacceptable in itself, but today’s violation, during which three fighter jets entered our airspace, is unprecedentedly brazen,” said Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna.
Speaking about the breach, Donald Trump said: “I don’t love it. I don’t like it when that happens. It could be big trouble”.
The violation was described as a “reckless and dangerous activity” by UK Defence Secretary John Healey.
Meanwhile a Nato spokesperson said that it was “yet another example of reckless Russian behaviour and Nato’s ability to respond”.

Polish jets had previously been forced to scramble to shoot down a barrage of drones, when they entered its airspace on the night of September 9-10.
According to Warsaw, there were 19 instrusions into Polish airspace and Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned that “this situation brings us the closest we have been to open conflict since World War Two”.
