But in the world of progressive rock, the list is even shorter. Just ask Pavlov's Dog— the beloved '70s band is still holding strong after five decades, and they've got a new album to prove it.
On Sept, 18, Pavlov's Dog dropped their lead single, "Jet Black Cadillac" from the forthcoming LP, Wonderlust. The album, due out on Oct. 3, is the band's eighth studio LP, the first of which, Pampered Menial, was released in 1975, marking the start of the band's fifty-year run in the public eye.
Formed in St. Louis in 1972, the band's first record, Pampered Menial catapulted Pavlov's Dog into the spotlight of the progressive rock scene of the 1970s. But the band's early mainstream success was short lived. After the buzz surrounding their breakout hit, "Julia," faded, the band's original lineup crumbled.
However, co-founder, primary songwriter, guitarist, and lead singer, David Surkamp, kept the band going, despite its markedly smaller fanbase, continuing to blend folk, rock, and classical influences into a unique, singular sound. In 1990, Surkamp and Doug Rayburn, another of the band's co-founders, reunited and continued to push the band forward creativity on its third studio album, Lost In America.
The band's lineup has gone through several incarnations over the years, and Doug Rayburn died in 2012. But, Surkamp has remained at the helm, leading the band through the recording of Echo & Boo in 2010, The Pekin Tapes in 2014, Prodigal Dreamer in 2018, and Wonderlust.
"I'm so proud of 'Wonderlust,'" Surkamp said in a recent interview. "Sometimes it just takes a half century to discover the proper lyrics, chords and melodies."
