Game of the week: Volleyball powerhouses Eaton, University collide

Get your popcorn ready.

If ever there were a clear “feature presentation” during the local fall high school sports regular season, the gym at University Middle School will provide exactly that on Tuesday.

Class 4A contender, the University Bulldogs, will play host to perennial 3A powerhouse, the Eaton Reds, in a much-anticipated Patriot League girls volleyball match.

University is 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the Class 4A/3A/2A Patriot League. Eaton is 9-1, 4-0, with its only loss coming in the first match of the season against one of 4A’s best teams, Windsor.

Either, or both, of these teams could be playing in the final match of the season Nov. 15 in the Denver Coliseum.

In the past 14 years, there have been only six times in which one of these two teams did not win the 3A title.

The Reds won seven of those titles during that stretch.

The Bulldogs won the only girls volleyball state title in their program’s history in 2021, a few years before moving up to 4A from 3A. University also had a runner-up finish behind Resurrection Christian in 2023.

As far as head-to-head matches go, in 10 meetings during the past five years, Eaton has gone 8-2.

The Bulldogs’ last win in this highly heated rivalry was deep in the 2023 3A state tournament when University defeated the Reds in a dramatic five-set semifinals match.
