According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, reigning All-Star Tyler Herro will undergo surgery on his left foot. The news comes only weeks before training camps open across the NBA. As of now, there appears to be no set timetable for a return, but the guard will be sidelined to begin the 2025-26 regular season.
Herro had dealt with issues in his foot last season, per Charania, but the problem seemingly became worse following an ankle injury during an offseason workout. Herro is fresh off easily the best season of his career. Herro averaged 23.9 points with 5.5 assists and 5.2 rebounds per game. He also shot a career-high 47.2 percent from the field, as well as 37.5 percent from downtown on nearly 9.0 attempts a night.

While injury trouble is nothing new for Tyler Herro, the 25-year-old seemed to be trending in the right direction last season. To go along with his career-high scoring, Herro played in a career-high 77 games. He had never appeared in more than 67 regular-season contests over his first five years in the league.
Especially with the Jimmy Butler era coming to an end, Herro’s durability and continued growth became essential for the Heat. The team managed to fight its way out of another Play-In Tournament once again, only to fall in a quick four games to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Still, despite the sweep, Herro’s emergence has felt pivotal for a franchise in flux. He continues to look like a clear building block with elite offensive upside.
With that in mind, Miami could be in for a rude awakening to start the regular season. Expectations were already tempered for the retooling franchise, as most sportsbooks have set their win total in the mid-to-high 30s. Removing Herro from the equation for an extended period of time could put them even closer to the bottom of the Eastern Conference.
The East is already expected to be a complete wild card. Jayson Tatum and Tyrese Haliburton are both in line to miss the entire season, while the Milwaukee Bucks have gone through a massive change with the departure of Damian Lillard. Let’s also not forget that the 76ers are fresh off an ugly 24-win season. At the end of the day, this conference is wide open and playoff spots could be up for grabs. The unkown surrounding Herro only reaffirms that.
For what it’s worth, this could prove to be especially important news for the Chicago Bulls. Another team that seemingly has no interest in throwing in the towel, the Heat have been a thorn in the Bulls’ side for years. Miami has eliminated them from three-straight Play-In Tournaments, and who is to say they don’t end up battling for seeding again this season? Of course, Herro is expected to be back in the fold at some point this season, but only time will tell if they can stay in the postseason picture during those weeks/months without him.
The Bulls will play the Heat for the first time on Nov. 21. The two teams will not face off again until 2026.
