Jason Aldean Pays Tribute to Late Songwriter Behind Some of His Biggest Hits

Country superstar Jason Aldean delivered an emotional tribute to the late Brett Jamesduring his concert at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska, on Thursday night.

James, a celebrated Grammy-winning songwriter and inductee into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, tragically died in a small plane crash in North Carolina on September 18.

Aldean shared with the audience that he had just learned of James’ passing moments before going on stage.

“This next song is a song that was one of the songs that was early on in my career,” Aldean said. “A longtime friend of ours, the guy that wrote this song, actually, we found out today died in a plane crash in North Carolina. This guy has written a lot of stuff for us over the years.”

James’ songwriting defined much of modern country music. He penned hits like Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus, Take The Wheel,” which won a Grammy, and Kenny Chesney’s “When The Sun Goes Down.”

Aldean mentioned several of James’ contributions to his albums, including “Two Night Town” (Old Boots, New Dirt) and “Grown Woman” featuring Miranda Lambert (Relentless). Then, Aldean performed “The Truth,” a chart-topping hit co-written by James and Ashley Monroe from his Wide Open album, dedicating the song to his late friend.

“He also wrote this next song, which ended up being one of the biggest songs of my career,” Aldean stated. “So tonight we want to send this out to our friend that we lost tonight, our boy Mr. Brett James.”
