Chicago Bears Keys to Victory Against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3

The Chicago Bears are down bad as we head into the weekend, but hope isn’t lost just yet. However, if Chicago wants to keep their January dreams alive long enough for some key players to get healthy and Ben Johnson’s unit to start clicking on all cylinders, they’ll need to steal a win against Dallas at Soldier Field this week and then do the same next week against a more beatable Raiders opponent.

Dallas is a road favorite against the Bears, and if things don’t go according to plan, they’ll run away with this contest. Still, Chicago has a viable path to victory and a path to entering the bye week 2-2.

Here’s what Chicago needs to do to get the job done against the Cowboys this week.

    Bears Keys to Victory

Dennis Allen Needs to Find Pressure From the Front Four

For better or worse, the Chicago Bears have invested heavily in their defensive line. Montez Sweat cost Chicago a second-round pick and a four-year, $98 million extension. Gervon Dexter was a second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Grady Jarrett and Dayo Odeyingbo cost Chicago $60.5 million in guaranteed money this offseason.

We can argue that the investments were bad ones, but we’re here, and those players generated no sacks and just four pressures against the Detroit Lions in Week 2. This allowed Detroit’s rushing attack to set the tone and Jared Goff to tee off on a battered and bruised secondary.

Getting creative and involving the secondary and linebackers in blitzes isn’t really a viable option this week with their injury statuses and CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, and Jake Ferguson running routes for Dak Prescott. So, the front four is going to have to win far more than they did against Detroit.

Chicago’s defense allows opposing quarterbacks to complete passes at a higher clip than any other team in the league, and that starts with the lack of pressure from the front four.

If Chicago doesn’t find a way to win up front, Dak Prescott and the Cowboys’ offense will have a big day.

Keep Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys Offense Off the Field

Speaking of that, the following key is keeping that offense as much as possible off the field. Chicago’s Swiss cheese secondary — with the currently healthy players — and their ineffective pass rush will make for a long day for the Bears if they’re overexposed to Prescott and the Cowboys offense.

Chicago’s defense allowed 8.8 yards per play to Detroit in Week 2, and if the offense can’t control the clock, it will likely be the same again.

Miserable fact: Tyrique Stevenson — who will be the Bears’ top cornerback this weekend — is allowing opposing passers a perfect 158.3 passer rating when targeted.

Prescott and the Cowboys just hung 40 points on the New York Giants last week and didn’t have much of a problem moving the ball against the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1.

Ben Johnson’s game plan this week needs to revolve around moving the sticks and keeping his offense on the field. It has to happen, whether through D’Andre Swift, an increased role for Kyle Monangai, or an expanded role for his tight ends.

Last week, I was happy to see more downfield shots, but this week, I’m more than fine with Johnson and quarterback Caleb Williams playing the don’t go broke game and grinding away the clock with long scoring drives.

Another Good Performance by Caleb Williams

Bears quarterback Caleb Williams performed much better in Week 2, and we need to see another step forward from the second-year signal caller.

Building on the second key to victory, Williams needs to find his tight ends more and stay ahead of the sticks. Winning the time-of-possession battle is going to be the determining factor in this game, and that starts with Williams keeping Chicago ahead of the chains.

One thing that worked well for Williams in Week 2 was protection. Williams was the highest graded passer at PFF when the pocket was clean.

The offensive line is going to win a bunch on Sunday, but Williams will have to execute the simple stuff if the Bears have any chance of avoiding 0-3.
