‘It felt like football’: UNC’s Hudson Voggesser surprised by Big Sky Conference honor

Hudson Voggesser didn’t know he was on his way to a Big Sky Conference award last week.

A redshirt freshman linebacker from Loveland High School and Fort Collins, Voggesser was named the Big Sky defensive player of the week this week after recording 16 tackles last Saturday at the University of South Dakota.

The 16 tackles were a game high and career high for Voggesser, helping the Bears stay with the nationally ranked Coyotes before an overtime loss. He had seven solo tackles, a one-half tackle for a loss of two yards and a quarterback hurry.

“It just felt like football, you know, just out there, playing the game and just executing the game plan,” he said. “I think we had a good game plan going in, just trying to stop the run.”

Voggesser said he was surprised by the Big Sky award, which marked the second time in two week a member of the UNC defense was recognized by the conference. Defensive lineman Ezra Ekuban shared the award the previous week. Voggesser said he didn’t know he had 16 tackles until after the game.

“I played hard,” he said. “I think they’re always going to recognize that. But I was super surprised that I got player of the week.”

The Bears weren’t successful against one USD back. L.J. Phillips ran for 301 yards on 35 carries and two touchdowns. The Coyotes had 406 yards of total offense against UNC.

Voggesser said the team feels good heading to Houston Christian this weekend for the Bears’ final nonconference game of the season. He expressed confidence in the UNC offense that opened up and moved the ball better in the second half at South Dakota. Bears quarterback Eric Gibson Jr. threw for 336 yards, which is a high for a QB under current head coach Ed Lamb.

UNC (1-2) and HCU (1-2) kick off at 5 p.m. Saturday at Husky Stadium in Houston, Texas. The game is available on ESPN+ and Pirate Radio 93.5 FM.

Voggesser said the Bears this week have also worked on improving its run defense.

“I think it’s just kind of the same stuff we’ve seen all year,” he added. “Just kind of game planning that and just executing (on defense) in the front seven, stopping the run and I know the DBs (defensive backs) will take care of the rest.”
