The New Orleans Saints have suffered a major setback in their bid to host the 2031 Super Bowl at the Caesars Superdome.
The Saints were planning to submit an official bid for Super Bowl LXV, but ongoing lease talks with the state of Louisiana are yet to be completed, officials say, as they missed a critical NFL deadline to submit their official bid.
No lease deal with Louisiana blocking Super Bowl bid
Saints spokesperson Greg Bensel said that a lease extension with the state of Louisiana for the Caesars Superdome has not been finalized beyond 2030.
Therefore, the team were unable to submit a bid before the NFL’s deadline.
“Unfortunately, the Super Bowl committee did meet yesterday and our city cannot advance as an option to bid on future Super Bowl games due to the fact that our lease extension has not been signed,” Bensel told the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
The Saints are in talks for a further ten-year extension to take their current deal with the state until 2040.
NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy also told the New Orleans Times-Picayune that the Saints are not eligible to host Super Bowl LXV, as it stands.
“The NFL is not going to award a Super Bowl to a team that doesn’t have a lease for the year in which they’re requesting a Super Bowl,” McCarthy said.
While there isn’t panic yet among officials, the Saints risk losing their advantage to other stadiums amid competition among newer and flashier stadiums across the league.
For example, the Buffalo Bills have their $2.2 billion New Highmark Stadium welcoming visitors in 2026.
Meanwhile, the Jacksonville Jaguars will have their $1.4 billion “stadium of the future” ready by 2028.
Right now, the league only has venues for the next three Super Bowls confirmed.

After that, the 2027 Super Bowl will return to the $5.5 billion SoFi Stadium before it heads to Atlanta in 2028.
While the $2 billion Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas is in talks to host the 2029 game.
History of the Caesars Superdome
New Orleans has always been a popular Super Bowl destination, with the city hosting the game a record-tying 11 times, sharing the honor with Miami.
The stadium opened in 1975 for $134 million, which is estimated to be $786 million in today’s dollars.
It makes the stadium the fifth-oldest in the NFL, and once the Bills open their New Highmark Stadium, it will become the fourth-oldest.
In 2005, the Superdome was devastated by Hurricane Katrina and ended up becoming a home for and sheltered 25-35,000 people during the storm.
Repairs to the arena cost over $250 million, with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the state of Louisiana, and the NFL all contributing.
Before the 2024 season, a $560 million renovation upgraded the facility into the world-class venue that it is today.
It successfully hosted the 2024 Super Bowl that saw the Philadelphia Eagles thump the Kansas City Chiefs.
