Jimmy Kimmel Ordered to Apologize and Compensate Charlie Kirk’s Family by ABC Affiliate Group

After Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show was pulled from multiple ABC affiliates after a backlash over his comments on the death of Charlie Kirk, some conditions have been outlined for his show’s possible return.

Sinclair Broadcast Group, which owns the nation’s largest group of ABC affiliates, confirmed that Jimmy Kimmel Live! has been “indefinitely preempted” on its stations until further notice in a Press release on Wednesday, September 17.

Sinclair said it “objects to recent comments made by Mr. Kimmel concerning the assassination of Charlie Kirk” and had reached an agreement with ABC to suspend the program, per People. Sinclair vice chairman Jason Smith called the remarks “inappropriate and deeply insensitive at a critical moment for our country,” adding that broadcasters must “educate and elevate respectful, constructive dialogue in our communities.”

The company also outlined conditions for Kimmel’s reinstatement. These include “formal discussions” with ABC about its standards of professionalism, a direct apology to the Kirk family, and “a meaningful personal donation to the Kirk Family and Turning Point USA,” the nonprofit founded by Kirk. Sinclair concluded that the show would not return to air “until it is confident that appropriate steps have been taken to uphold the standards expected of a national broadcast platform.”

The release further explained that Sinclair affiliates in major cities would replace Kimmel’s program with “a special in remembrance” of Kirk. The tribute is slated to air across Sinclair stations nationwide this weekend.

Kimmel’s suspension stems from remarks made during his September 15 monologue, where he criticized attempts to politicize Kirk’s murder, as well as comments on Kirk's alleged killer, Tyler Robinson. Many celebrities, including Wanda Sykes, Henry Winkler, Josh Gad, and comedian Mike Birbigila, have all shown their support for the late night host.
