CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein made a new call for public safety changes during an appearance on Thursday in Charlotte’s South End neighborhood.
It comes nearly a month after Iryna Zarutska was stabbed to death on the Blue Line.
Stein told reporters he has worked with Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles to surge police on public transit in the Queen City. At the legislative level, he called on lawmakers to make changes to how magistrate judges do their work.
The governor wants legislation that creates “more accountability, including an unambiguous chain of command, published disciplinary processes and common-sense removal procedures will boost confidence in our system.”
Additionally, Stein is asking the General Assembly to pass his proposed $195 million public safety package that would raise law enforcement pay and create units focused on cold cases and drug trafficking.
Last week, top Republican lawmakers told media they are drafting legislation to ban any form of cashless bail and resume executions in North Carolina.
“We must deliver justice for Iryna and the countless families across our state that have fallen victim to a justice on them that does not support them and does not keep them safe,” said Senate Pro Tem Phil Berger.
Stein, meanwhile, is not ready to call for the return of executions, pointing to ongoing litigation.
“The death penalty is a serious penalty that should be reserved for those who commit truly heinous crimes. It is the law of the land in North Carolina, and there are some lawsuits where courts have been holding it up. And we have to go through the legal process,” said Stein.
Lawmakers return to the General Assembly in Raleigh on Monday.
