All eyes have been on Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel.
The Dolphins have looked hapless through the first two weeks of the season and seem like a rudderless ship under McDaniel’s leadership.
The fourth-year head coach’s job security has been a hot topic early in the season.
However, not so fast, said Ian Rapoport on Amazon’s Thursday Night Football pregame coverage. Rapoport reported that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross and his $17 billion empire don’t actually want to fire McDaniel.
Host Charissa Thompson asked Rapoport about McDaniel’s job security. The NFL insider believes he is safe but revealed two caveats that could change the situation.
“Stephen Ross, the Dolphins owner, does not want to fire Mike McDaniel, he doesn’t,” Rapoport said. “He wants this to work, he likes him, he believes in him.
“He has invested in him, including giving him a contract extension last year, that still has two years and about $19 million left after this year.
“Whenever possible, he has been patient, My sense is nothing is imminent for the Dolphins on that front.
“However, there’s a caveat that could change. If fans suddenly stop showing up to the stadium or if players stop playing for him, that can alter the situation.”
If the losses keep piling up, fans will naturally lose interest and call for a change. The players themselves are also likely to check out as the weeks go by.
Only then would Ross give McDaniel the pink slip.
