Kristin Chenoweth Responds to Backlash Over Viral Charlie Kirk Comments: Hurt Me So Badly

For the first time, Kristin Chenoweth is addressing the backlash she received for posting a sympathetic comment after Charlie Kirk's death on Sept. 10.

In the comments of an Instagram video of Kirk debating a woman about abortion, Chenoweth wrote, “I’m. So. Upset. Didn’t always agree but appreciated some perspectives. What a heartbreak. His young family. I know where he is now. Heaven. But still ?.”

During an interview with Frank DiLella of Spectrum News/NY1 on Thursday, Sept. 18, Chenoweth was asked about the intent of her comment, as Kirk seemingly held different views than the actress on a variety of issues, including rights for the LGBTQ+ community.

“You have a big LGBTQ+ fan base. You know, for members and allies in the LGBTQ+ community, Charlie was a controversial figure," DiLella asked. "He openly opposed same-sex marriage, trans rights. So I ask, what were you hoping to convey with that post?”

Chenoweth became visibly emotional after hearing the question, responding, "I'm sorry if emotion gets involved here, forgive me. I saw what happened online with my own eyes and I had a human moment of reflection right then. I came to understand that my comment hurt some folks and that hurt me so badly. I would never. It’s no secret that I’m a Christian, that I’m a person of faith. It’s also no secret that I am an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and for some, that doesn’t go together. But for me, it always has and it always will."

When DiLella pointed out that her comment had been met with “mixed reactions,” Chenoweth replied, “Mixed? You’re being kind.”

After Chenoweth's statement went viral online, fans took to social media to express disappointment, saying Kirk's platform was inconsistent with her purported views and the comment was unexpected from her.

In addition to the comment, Chenoweth also shared an X post from political analyst Brian Allen to her Instagram Stories, which called Kirk’s death “horrifying and unacceptable.”

“You don’t have to agree with a man to reject violence against him. We cannot normalize bullets over beliefs,” it read. “America is not a war zone for political speech. If it becomes one, no one will be safe; left, right, or center.”
