Late-Night Legend David Letterman Suggests Jimmy Kimmels Firing Was Premeditated

Late-night legend David Letterman isn't holding back when it comes to his feelings surrounding Jimmy Kimmel's indefinite suspension from ABC.

The former The David Letterman Show host, who also had his own turns as host of The Late Show and Late Night, spoke out during an appearance at The Atlantic Festival 2025 in New York today, Sept. 18, as recounted by Variety.

“This is misery,” he said, referring to the pulling of Kimmel's time slot yesterday, Sept. 17. “I feel bad about this. We see where this is all going, correct?"

"It’s managed media," he continued. "And it’s no good. It’s silly. It’s ridiculous. And you can’t go around firing somebody because you’re fearful or trying to suck up to an authoritarian criminal administration in the Oval Office. That’s just not how this works.”

Letterman then called on Donald Trump's crusade against late-night hosts directly, adding, “The institution of the president of the United States ought to be bigger than a guy doing a talk show,” pointing out that Kimmel's fate was “predicted by our president right after Stephen Colbert got walked off."

"...so you’re telling me this isn’t premeditated at some level?” he questioned.

Trump previously gloated over the cancellation of Stephen Colbert’sshow and has repeatedly called on NBC to remove both Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers from the air, most recently writing on his personal social media platform, “That leaves Jimmy and Seth, two total losers, on Fake News NBC. Their ratings are also horrible. Do it NBC!!!”

He has also belittled Kimmel for a "lack of talent" and suggested that he "was fired because he had bad ratings more than anything else and he said a horrible thing about a great gentleman known as Charlie Kirk.”

Former President Barack Obama has also called out the "government coercion" he believes is involved in these situations, writing on X, “After years of complaining about cancel culture, the current administration has taken it to a new and dangerous level by routinely threatening regulatory action against media companies unless they muzzle or fire reporters and commentators it doesn’t like.”

In a follow-up, Obama included a link to an article about the firing of a Washington Post columnist and added, “This is precisely the kind of government coercion that the First Amendment was designed to prevent — and media companies need to start standing up rather than capitulating to it.”

Fans of The View are calling on the cast to do the same after their "shameful" silence on the matter during today's broadcast, encouraging the panel of women to "walk off" rather than be silenced.

Letterman also shared an update on Kimmel following the yanking of his show, after the current late-night host texted the veteran earlier this morning. “He’s up in bed, taking nourishment. He’s going to be fine,” Letterman quipped.
