Universal to Shut Down Popular Thrill Ride For Major Refurbishments

Change can always be a tad scary, most especially when it takes the form of extensive renovations made to a fan-favorite theme park attraction.

Unfortunately, such is the fate that has befallen Universal Studios Orlando's belovedJurassic ParkRiver Adventure, which will undergo extensive refurbishment over the course of 11 months in 2025.

As reported by WDW News Today, Jurassic Park River Adventure will temporarily cease operations beginning on January 5, 2026. It's planned to reopen later in the year on November 19, 2026.

As of yet, Universal has not indicated what new changes might be in store for the attraction. While the ride's mechanics might be receiving some extensive repairs, it's also possible the attraction will reopen with far more drastic updates, similar to its Hollywood counterpart's conversion into the Jurassic World: The Ride in 2019.

As those familiar with the ride likely know, the Jurassic Park River Adventure involves riders boarding a 25-passenger river raft to explore the prehistoric grounds of the titular park.

In the first leg of the river cruise, guests interacts with a variety of peaceful herbivorous dinosaurs in their natural environments.

In the second half of the trip, passengers then come face-to-face with some of Jurassic Park's most dangerous dino antagonists, including Dilophosaurus, Velociraptors and a massive TyrannosaurusRex.

Originally opening in Universal Islands of Adventure in May, 1999, Jurassic Park River Adventure has long remained the center piece of Universal's Jurassic Park area of the park.

In addition to the thrilling water-based dark ride, the Jurassic Park area of Islands of Adventure also features several other noteworthy attractions. These include the child-friendly Pteranodon Flyers, the interactive play areas Jurassic Park Discovery Center and Camp Jurassic.

Perhaps most interestingly, the area also includes the recently opened VelociCoaster, a fast-paced roller coaster that opened at Universal in 2021.
