Around The Campus: New Transfer Portal Approved, Quarterback Updates, London Game, More

We have a few college football notes from around the country as we head into Week 4. First, the new transfer portal has been approved. Plus, there are a few quarterback updates for this weekend’s games to get to. Let’s get to all that and more.

New Transfer Portal Approved

The NCAA officially voted to eliminate the college football spring transfer portal window. The NCAA Administrative Committee voted earlier this week to get rid of the second transfer portal window. However, the committee has yet to decide on the dates for the winter window. Previously, the transfer portal opened in early December after the regular season wrapped up, but the new proposed timeline would have it from January 2nd to January 11th.

I’ve said it before, I’m a fan of this move. I think if you commit somewhere in January, you should be locked in for at least the year. Joey Aguilar transferred to UCLA in December, then in the spring, UCLA brought in Nico Iamaleava when he essentially held out just before spring practices for more money, which then forced Aguilar to transfer, too.

That much movement can’t really be good for the players. Yes, I’m sure there are cases where the spring portal was a good thing, but college football has turned into the wild west over the last few years. I’m fine with players transferring, but I don’t think it was good for the sport or the majority of the student-athletes at the frequency at which it was being allowed.

As for the later January window, I think that would be a great move. It would allow college football playoff teams to stay intact through the semifinals, and it would allow teams in bowl games the ability to stay together as well, though I’m sure there will still be opt-outs. The one downside is that coaches remaining in the playoffs will have to put a little extra time and work into building out their rosters for the next season, but those are champagne problems, and head coaches get paid enough to be able to take on that extra workload.

I love that college football has modernized a bit and is allowing players to make money and financially benefit from the massive amounts of money the schools are making from the programs. However, there still needs to be some form of regulation, and I think this is a positive step toward getting things back under control a bit.

    Colorado, South Carolina QB Updates

Let’s start with Colorado where the QB Shuffle continues. Head Coach Deion Sanders is turning back to Kaidon Salter as the team’s starting signal caller this Saturday against Wyoming. Salter started the first two games of the season – a tight home loss to Georgia Tech and a win over Delaware – before being replaced by Ryan Staub for the Buffaloes’ 36-20 loss to Houston last week. Staub was the third-string quarterback on the depth chart behind Salter and five-star freshman Julian Lewis. Lewis has yet to earn a start this season.

After their game against Wyoming on Saturday, Colorado has a really tough stretch in their schedule. They play at TCU, at home against Iowa State, then at Utah. If that three-week stretch goes poorly, I wouldn’t be stunned to see Lewis get some starts. Heck, given Coach Prime’s willingness to make a change if he feels it necessary, we might even see him earlier to try and give that team a spark. So, long story short, we’ll see what happens in the long-term, but for now, it’s back to Kaidon Salter under center for Colorado.

As for South Carolina, its starting quarterback, LaNorris Sellers, is listed as questionable for the team’s big matchup with Missouri on Saturday. Sellers left last weekend’s blowout loss at home to Vanderbilt after a hit to the head and did not return. Gamecocks Head Coach Shane Beamer told reporters Sellers has been practicing this week, so obviously that’s a good sign.

The Gamecocks made a late playoff push last season behind the outstanding play of Sellers, but ultimately fell just short. They came into this season with high expectations in the SEC, but they also lost the vast majority of their starting defense from last year’s team. If they want to make a playoff push, they can’t really afford any more losses like the Vanderbilt one. So, Sellers being on the field for them this weekend is pretty important against a team like Missouri.

Kansas & Arizona State Could Be Heading Across The Pond

College football is already locked into a Dublin game for the foreseeable future, but another trip to the United Kingdom could be in the cards. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Kansas and Arizona State are in discussions to take their game to London in 2026. If approved, the game would take place on September 19th, 2026, in Wembley Stadium, and the Jayhawks’ previously scheduled September 19th matchup with Middle Tennessee State would be moved to Week 0.

If this game gets the green light, it would be the third college football game scheduled to be played overseas next season. In addition to this potential matchup, TCU and North Carolina are set for the Dublin game, and Michigan and Western Michigan are playing in Germany.

I’m a little bit surprised that, for the second straight year, it looks like we’ll see a team willingly giving up a home conference game. But hey, if the price is right, I guess it always makes sense to those calling the shots.
