A rescue mission is underway Thursday after a helicopter crashed in Washington State near Joint Base Lewis-McChord the night before, according to the Army.
An Army official said the helicopter crashed at about 9 p.m. Wednesday, though no details were immediately as to the number of passengers or the type of aircraft.
Deputies from the Thurston County sheriff’s office, based in Olympia, were dispatched and were believed to have located the scene of the crash in the Summit Lake area, west of Olympia, according to a statement posted to social media late Wednesday.
“We have been advised that the military lost contact with a helicopter in the area,” the department said, adding that it was working with the military base “to deploy any resources needed to assist.”
“This remains a developing situation, and no additional details are available at this time,” the statement added.
Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders also said on Facebook that despite locating the crash site, officials “have been unable to continue rescue efforts as the scene is on fire.”
Located about 10 miles south of Tacoma, Wash., Joint Base Lewis-McChord is home to roughly 14,000 military personal and is under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Army Joint Base Headquarters.
