Sara Guerrero: Communications director, Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.)

Sara Guerrero always had the bug.

As a new graduate of the University of South Florida, Guerrero had a singular mind to land an internship on Capitol Hill, found it in the office of then-Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), and hasn't looked back since.

"It was like a dream I always had, to work in politics," she said.

In just a few years, that dream has found Guerrero on a whirlwind tour through both chambers and onto the campaign trail, building a resume as packed as you'll find for any 28-year-old staffer on the Hill.

Guerrero started with a bang: Her first full-time job in the Capitol was with the press team for Sen. Chuck Schumer (N.Y.), the long-time Democratic leader. She then trekked to Nevada to help elect former President Biden in 2020; returned to Washington for stints with Rep. Sylvia Garcia (D-Texas) and Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.); and jumped back onto campaigns with the Democratic National Committee in the 2022 midterm cycle.

Since then, Guerrero has been in the office of Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), the former Long Beach mayor and a quickly rising star in the Democratic caucus. Indeed, in June, House Democrats elected Garcia to lead the party on the powerful Oversight and Government Reform Committee — an almost unheard-of promotion for a lawmaker in just his second term.

For Guerrero, that's meant a vastly expanded role leading communications for Garcia's personal office, his committee office and his campaign. But she's not complaining, portraying her boss, and her team, as the best in the Capitol. A sign posted prominently in the office sums up the mood: "Are you having fun?"

“We've been able to maintain a sense of levity when it comes to these really stressful moments and these really scary times," she said. "I look forward to coming to work everyday, and I think that's like a real gift, especially after Jan. 6."

A native of Bogotá, Colombia, Guerrero is also motivated by the Trump administration's aggressive immigration and deportation policies, which she views as antithetical to America’s founding as a country of immigrants. She pointed to one episode in particular, the June manhandling of Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) by a Homeland Security Department security detail, as a driving reason she's drawn to her job in politics.

"That was a particularly disturbing moment that reminded me that it's important to have immigrants in Congress, it's important to have Latinos in Congress, and it's important to stand up for equal treatment and for people to respect us," she said.

"That's something that motivates me daily."
