Luke Littler has revealed he is already eyeing up the World Darts Championship, despite it being almost three months away.
Off the back of losing out to Michael van Gerwen in the World Series of Darts Finals, the Nuke is already setting his sights on defending his maiden world title.
The 18-year-old became darts’ youngest-ever world champion with victory over Van Gerwen in January.
What is next for Luke Littler?
Littler has several major tournaments to get through before the all-important Alexandra Palace showdown.
The countdown for it starts with the World Grand Prix, which gets underway on October 6.
After this, the big fixtures begin to pile up, with the European Championship, the Grand Slam of Darts and the Players Championship final taking place within the space of a month.
This could prove a lucrative period for Littler, with over £1.5million up for grabs in prize money.
And the teenage sensation can then secure the sport’s biggest jackpot in December, with a £1m prize on the line if he manages to win seven games in a row at the World Championship.
If Littler defends his title, he will become the first player to lift the Sid Wadell trophy in consecutive year since Gary Anderson in 2016.
This is certainly already in the back of his mind, as the world no.2 revealed he is counting down the weeks until the showpiece event.
Speaking at the launch of a new Target Darts pop-up shop in Manchester, Littler said: “As the days are ticking by and the Worlds are shortly coming round, then it does start to get exciting.
“The first year was just new to me, I was just enjoying it. This year I’m also enjoying it. I’ve won a few titles.
Littler won £500,000 with his world championship title in JanuaryAFP“It’s the same old busy schedule. From about four weeks ago, up until the World’s, I’ve got two weekends off before my first game, so it’s very busy. It’s all preparation for the Worlds.
“Obviously I want to win the Worlds. All the players would look at the prize money but for myself, it’s just about going back-to-back.”
Littler’s comments come just days after he lost 11-7 to Van Gerwen in an eventful end to the World Series of Darts Finals in Amsterdam.
What happened at the World Series of Darts Finals?
The reigning world champion served up plenty of drama, as he riled up a hostile crowd which booed and whistled at him throughout.
And Littler made sure to give some back to the fans – taking his time before one throw, as he walked over to take a sip of water.
Instead of quickly getting on with his throw, the Englishman took him time by swilling his glass, before finally stepping up and hitting double ten on his second throw.
Littler wound up the Dutch fans in Amsterdam as he took his time to throw mid-frameDespite this, it wasn’t enough for him to stop Van Gerwen, who broke away with the score at 6-6.
The Dutchman won five of the next six legs to clinch his first televised PDC title in two years.
Littler doesn’t have to wait long for a chance to gain his revenge of Van Gerwen though.
Both stars are in action at the upcoming Hungarian Darts Trophy, which runs from Friday, September 19, until Sunday, September 21.
