ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The murder-arson trial for Taquida Hendrix, accused of intentionally setting a fire with her sister that killed 5-year-old Malakai Stovall in Rochester in July 2024, is coming to a close.
Taquida Hendrix previously pleaded not guilty to arson, murder and assault charges.
Deliberation started and ended quickly Wednesday. The jury went in around 4:30 p.m. and ended at 4:45 p.m. with no verdict yet. Deliberations will continue Thursday morning.
Taquida chose not to testify Wednesday and the defense rested its case. Then closing arguments started.
Family members in court were seen wiping their faces with tissues as the prosecution laid out evidence. It included surveillance footage, police body camera footage of the fire, and the 911 call Malakai’s babysitter made that night as she yelled and begged for help.
Assistant District Attorney Kevin Sunderland shared how evidence and testimony from two suspects in the case helped his closing arguments.
“I think their testimony is corroborated by all the evidence that we’ve seen, obviously you were all apart of this you watched this, there was a significant amount of surveillance footage,” said Sunderland. “The Rochester Police Department did everything possible. They went from house to house. We take all that surveillance footage and in the end I think it corroborates everything those witnesses say.”
The other two suspects in this case, Taquida’s sister Tiakayla Hendrix and Roy Chambers, both pleaded guilty to second degree arson in August and testified against Taquida in the trial.
