Egypt sees steel as a strategic industry vital to economic growth, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel al-Wazir said on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, as the government works to expand production and reduce market gaps.
Speaking at the 30th meeting of the ministerial group for industrial development, Wazir said Egypt still faces shortages in hot and cold rolled steel, galvanized and colored sheets, and billet, stressing the need to meet local demand and curb monopolistic practices.
He noted that the government has identified 28 key industries to attract investment and deepen local manufacturing, with temporary incentives under consideration for investors. These sectors were chosen based on market needs, resource availability, and alignment with Egypt’s export potential, according to him.
The group approved during the meeting a proposal to blacklist factories involved in electricity theft, with enforcement support from the Interior Ministry, and endorsed guidelines to boost energy efficiency in industrial operations.
