Search and rescue crews are conducting a massive operation to find two men who went elk hunting last week in a remote forested area south of Alamosa and haven’t been heard from since.
Deputies with the Conejos County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Rio De Los Pinos trailhead on Friday on a report that the hunters — 25-year-old Andrew Porter of Asheville, N.C., and 25-year-old Ian Stasko of Salt Lake City — hadn’t checked in with loved ones at an agreed-upon time.
The men were elk hunting in the San Juan Wilderness Area west of Trujillo Meadows Reservoir, not far from the New Mexico state line, authorities said.
Deputies found the men’s vehicle at the trailhead and saw camping gear and backpacks inside the vehicle. Given bad weather moving into the area, authorities launched a “massive” search for the men, including air operations, ground teams, dog teams, drone treams and local volunteers.
