Actress Valerie Bertinelli shared a throwback picture from her childhood and a heartfelt message with her social media followers.
In a September 16 Instagram upload, Bertinelli posted a picture from 1975. The photo showed the actress, who was then 15 years old, looking directly into the camera while shadows covered part of her face. In the caption of the post, she applauded her younger self for her strength and courage. As fans are aware, Bertinelli began starring as Barbara Cooper Royer on the beloved sitcom, One Day at a Time, during its first season, which premiered in 1975.
"#throwback 1975 I’m only just beginning to realize, 50 years later, how much courage this little girl had. I can remember grabbing fear and just walking through it because I had no other choice. So much gets thrown at us at such a young age and continues to be thrown at us all throughout our lifetime. I think we need to step back sometimes and just pat ourselves on the back," wrote Bertinelli in the caption. "You got through it. Good job. And you’ll get through the next storm too. And in those storms are the eyes, a calmness giving you a chance to catch your breath. Be sure to grab on to that just as fiercely. The hard parts maybe don’t get any easier but there is no doubt that right around the bend, serenity, grace, and well earned pride sits there waiting for you. Discovering your equanimity in all of it is such a magical space to find yourself in."
Several fans took to the post's comments section to share that they appreciated Bertinelli's message.
"Valerie, what you said about the younger you 'grabbing fear and just walking through it because I had no other choice,' this resonates so much with me! Our older selves can now congratulate ourselves on what we did to get through back then," wrote a commenter.
"I feel that deeply, especially now that I am in my 20s. It’s such a confusing time; always comparing my journey/accomplishments to others and never knowing whether I am making the right choices… all the while trying to figure out who I am! Maybe I should just breathe for a moment and give myself a pat on the back for having the courage to brave it all," added another.
"Thank you for your words of encouragement as I’m going through a rough time, but I know it will be better on the other side," stated a different person.
"Love to you! Our inside littles need love and compassion. It’s amazing when I look back and see how I was never really a child. I was a parentified adult. To this day, I observe if my reactions are coming from 5 year old 'adult' me or actual adult me. Processing the past in therapy has been such a blessing," chimed in a fourth Instagram user.
Valerie Bertinelli Spoke About the Start of Her Acting Career in a 2024 Interview
Bertinelli, who has starred in popular projects like Hot in Cleveland and Touched by an Angel, spoke about the start of her acting career in a 2024 interview on the Celebrity Jobber podcast. Bertinelli clarified that her parents were not in the entertainment industry. Rather, her mother, Nancy Bertinelli, was a "stay-at-home mom," and her father, Andrew Bertinelli, worked at General Motors.
The actress also said she began auditioning for commercials when she "was 11, 12."
"I got quite a few commercials. It took me a long time to get my first job. It was a little depressing. And it can really knock on your self-esteem. I'm still trying to recover at this stage. And I got One Day at a Time right when I barely turned 15," said Bertinelli in a 2024 interview.
She also expressed gratitude to producer and writer, Norman Lear, who developed One Day at a Time.
"I am so grateful that Norman was my mentor. Because there's not a lot of great mentors out there. Or weren't in Hollywood at the time. Maybe there aren't now, I don't know," said Bertinelli.
She also said she "was protected by him" and her co-stars, Pat Harrington Jr. and Bonnie Franklin, during her time on One Day at a Time.
"I'll be forever grateful that I had a somewhat decent childhood for being a child actor because of them," continued Bertinelli.
