Mark Ruffalo revealed he wrote a personal letter to his "hero" Robert Redford, though he was never able to send it to the iconic actor before his death.
Ruffalo, 57, took to Instagram on Tuesday, September 16, to open up about the letter, which he revealed just hours after it was reported that Redford died at the age of 89. In the post, Ruffalo explained that he penned the letter to Redford "when I learned he was ill."
"I didn’t get it to him before the news today. This is what a real American Hero looks like," he wrote in the caption. "A man who brought people together, lived and practiced empathy, and created good and useful organizations that made peoples lives better and included anyone who had an interest. Please remember him well."
Ruffalo's letter to Redford touched on many topics, including a staged reading of Redford's 1976 movie All the President's Men that he took part in. He also looked back on his memories of them working together on the 2001 film The Last Castle.
Another topic that Ruffalo covered in the note was Redford's work with the Sundance Institute, which the Our Souls at Night actor co-founded in 1981. Additionally, Ruffalo expressed condolences regarding Redford's son James' death after his cancer battle in 2020.
"You have had the most profound impact on my life and career in so many ways. You have been a hero of mine," the 13 Going on 30 star wrote. "I told you before. The short time together we had on The Last Castle was seminal to me. To be acting opposite of you. To have you be so generous with me. I felt so safe with you and looked after."

Ruffalo added he was "so proud" to have been able to work with Redford. "I am proud that I got to spend some time with you and proud I have been able to follow in your footsteps even in the smallest of ways," he continued. "You are still a hero to me. Thank you for being my teacher and role model."
The New York Times reported that Redford died at his home near Provo, Utah, on September 15. “Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah, the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved. He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy," his publicist, Cindi Berger, told the outlet in a statement.
While Ruffalo mentioned he was "ill," Redford's cause of death wasn't immediately shared.
