I’m glad I got an updated perscription from the optometrist because I am working hard to see silver linings for the Chicago Bears after an 0-2 start.
BEARS WEEK 2 COVERAGE: Post-game Recap | Instant Player Grades | 24-Hour Rule
Thankfully, Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson believes he is seeing progress from quarterback Caleb Williams after two games together. Don’t get it twisted. The Week 2 loss to the Detroit Lions was still one of the ugliest we’ve seen around here. And, unfortunately, Bears fans have a lot of ugly games to choose from when entering this conversation. But the head coach is coming away with some positive takeaways regarding his quarterback’s development, and saying he has seen “significant growth” feels like a silver lining worth highlighting today.
Words from Ben Johnson:
“It’s not perfect yet. There’s still a number of plays where our eyes aren’t quite in the right position or we’re holding onto the ball just a tick longer than what we’re coaching. But I did see tremendous growth in terms of going through the progression. There were a few times there where we had to get to number three or four in the read, and he was trusting his feet and his footwork and was able to get there. I think he got better from Week 1 to Week 2. I’m encouraged by what I saw. And I’m hopeful that we’ll continue to see another leap here this week.”
I like that the Bears’ head coach can use his words to strike a balance between things not being where he wants them and seeing positives despite a blowout loss. That isn’t an easy balance to find, and I know there aren’t too many coaches who have been at Halas Hall who have successfully found them over the years.

Caleb Williams is working through his development process
Caleb Williams went 19-for-30, threw for 207 yards, tossed a pair of touchdowns, and delivered an interception to go along with a 91.9 passer rating. Technically, it is an improvement from an underwhelming showing in Week 1. But, hey, incremental progress still counts as progress. Williams’ Week 2 production brings his season totals to 40/65 (61.5%), 417 yards, 3 touchdowns, 1 interception, and an 89.1 passer rating. My diagnosis: It could be better, but it could also be worse.
Because I like fun with small samples as much as the next Bears fan, this is what Caleb Williams’ 17-game pace looks like after two games in Ben Johnson’s offense:
340/552 (61.5%) 3,544 pass yards 25 touchdowns 8 interceptions 51 sacks 89.1 passer ratingWEEK 2 LOSS WAS A “KICK IN THE TEETH” … BUT CALEB WILLIAMS WAS NOT THE PROBLEM
On the one hand, the numbers above would fall short of the expectations we had for Caleb Williams coming into this season. But on the other hand, posting a 3-to-1 TD-INT ratio, 4.6 TD%, and 1.5 INT% in Year 2 in the league and Year 1 in a new system is something I wouldn’t have to work hard to talk myself into being a building block for a pivotal third season. We are only 19 games into Williams’ career, so I’m down to be patient and wait out how his development turns out. I realize not everyone will be as patient as me, but I strongly encourage the exercise of patience.
After all, we’re Bears fans and have been far more patient with lesser players over the years.
Of course, Ben Johnson isn’t the only one who hopes to see a Week 3 leap from Caleb Williams. I don’t think there is a Bears fan out there who doesn’t want to see Williams put up a huge game against former Bears coach Matt Eberflus, who flamed out as a head coach and is two games into his first season as the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive coordinator. Sure, the Cowboys beat the New York Giants in overtime last week. But the Dallas defense just allowed Russell Wilson to turn back the clock, throw for 450 yards, toss three touchdowns, and post a 123.0 passer rating. So I can’t think of a better time for a breakout game for QB1.
