80s Thrash Metal Band Celebrates One of the Truly Great Moments in Their History 14 Years Later

Baseball and thrash metal might seem to have little in common, but 14 years ago, their intersection was a defining moment in the music scene. Fans of metal likely haven’t forgotten when Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax—affectionately dubbed The Big 4—played at Yankee Stadium. Recently, Anthrax commemorated the moment on Facebook, stating that it “was one of the truly great moments in the history of Anthrax.”

Fans were beyond excited to celebrate the memory milestone with them.

“That was a fun show to be at and from seeing it Anthrax had good sound quality like the other times I saw them,” recalled one nostalgic fan. “Megadeth is always drowned out in the mix from the 3 times I have seen them. Slayer sounded awesome and Metallica went above and beyond with their show.”

“This was one of my favorite concerts with you! What a great day,” another reminisced.

But it wasn’t the easiest road to get there.

The truth is, playing with fellow legends isn’t always easy. A few of the bands had historical “beef” they had to squash before the tour, which hit several major cities. By that time, Anthrax, Metallica, and Slayer were all celebrating their 30th anniversaries, and being pioneers of the genre, there was some natural competition.

According to Rolling Stone,Lars Ulrich of Metallica once said about the show, “The camaraderie is real. There’s a segment of the metal community that would rather still have us feuding—it’s like, ‘It’s much more fun when Dave [Mustaine, who was kicked out of Metallica in 1983] and Lars hate each other, or when Kerry King talks [REDACTED] about Metallica.’ Obviously, everybody was very competitive, but there’s nothing to be competitive about now.”

The show itself was a huge event for East Coast fans and for Anthrax, who have New York roots. That’s exactly why they each rocked a custom jersey with their names on the back. Prior to the show, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. presented the heavy metal legends with a special honor: declaring September 14 as “Anthrax Day in the Bronx.”

Diaz Jr. cleverly referenced several of their album titles in the official proclamation, much to the delight of the band members:

“I welcome Anthrax back home as they ‘keep it in the family’ among the living here in the Bronx while bringing a ‘state of euphoria’ and the ‘sounds of white noise’ to tens of thousands of people right here in Yankee Stadium.”
