Appearing at the Investigative Reporters and Editors’ 50th anniversary gala this past Monday, acting icon Michael Keaton spoke about the recent gun violence that claimed the life of conservative media personality Charlie Kirk, as per Variety.
Addressing the crowd in attendance, the 74-year-old Batman actor started his speech by acknowledging the political differences in opinion between himself and the late Kirk, although he quickly pointed out that the 31-year-old also left behind a wife and two children.
“Before we start to get into the meat of this thing, I’m going to take a minute to say that, regardless of how I probably — not probably — have disagreed with many things he said, Charlie Kirk leaves behind two kids and a wife,” Keaton said. “You gotta remember that.”
“Because in the end, shooting people will never answer anything, and the irony that he was killed with a gun is unbelievable,” Keaton continued by saying.
Keaton's speech also coincided with similar remarks from the gala's host, 60 Minutes journalist Scott Pelley.
At the start of the event, Pelley directly addressed the tragic violence that claimed Kirk's life in Utah last week, as well as mentioning the death of the Democratic Minnesota politician Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark.
“Charlie Kirk was murdered to silence his speech, and three months earlier, former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were murdered to silence their speech,” Pelley said in his address.
“Many admired Kirk; many did not,” Pelley continued. “His catchphrase was ‘Prove me wrong.’ To some, that phrase was controversial — even dismissive. But the core idea was: Bring the proof and let’s debate.”
“Whether you agreed with Kirk’s ideas or Hortman’s, their murders, their silencing is blood on the First Amendment,” the 68-year-old author and CBS reporter finished by saying.
