“Those power forwards are hard to come by.” That’s what Rockford IceHogs head coach Jared Nightingale said about AJ Spellacy after the Blackhawks finished the weekend 1-1 at the Tom Kurvers Prospect Showcase. Spellacy got a lot of attention at last year’s event, and carried that into a strong training camp. This year, he was effective on both special teams, asserted himself physically all over the ice again and his speed popped off the ice whenever he came over the boards.
Ben Pope at the Chicago Sun-Times wrote his takeaways from the weekend’s games, and Spellacy was an intriguing situation to consider. There have been mixed reports about when the new NHL CBA will allow teams to stash one 19-year-old in the AHL per season, and Pope writes that Spellacy might be a perfect candidate if that’s possible this coming season.
“There’s no doubt Spellacy’s aggressive, physical playing style would fit seamlessly into the AHL. He’s a ‘wrecking ball’ who constantly makes his presence felt, including some crushing hits, after-the-whistle scrums and one full-fledged fight over the weekend.”

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) September 15, 2025 Spellacy was also prominent in Scott Powers’ takeaways from the showcase games as well for The Athletic. “Spellacy was either creating scoring chances or throwing his body around over the two games in Minnesota, using his size and speed to do it.“10 Blackhawks takeaways from the Tom Kurvers Prospect Showcase ⤵️ t.co/gcAwBFuVCe
— Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) September 15, 2025 An update on the Wyatt Kaiser contract situation came from Powers on Monday afternoon: status quo. They’re talking, but nothing is done — yet.“The Blackhawks and Kaiser’s agent have been negotiating a new contract for Kaiser for about the last month. As of Monday afternoon, the two sides had yet to agree on a deal. While the 23-year-old Kaiser has been in Chicago participating in informal ‘captain’ practices, he won’t be able to report to the Blackhawks on Wednesday for his medical evaluation without a finished contract.”
Steven Ellis at Daily Faceoff wrote about seven NHL sophomores who could make some noise this season. Blackhawks forward Frank Nazar was featured right up front in the piece (as you can see from the image in the tweet below). Here’s what Ellis wrote about Nazar:Many questioned why the 21-year-old received such a big contract despite having just 27 points in 54 games to his credit. But that’s going to be a bargain in the very, very near future. Nazar might be on the small side, but he’s an incredible passer, skates so well, has a great shot, is exceptionally smart and will get in your face every time he possibly can. By all accounts, it’s hard not to see Nazar becoming a huge part of Chicago’s long-term success. If his World Championship performance in May was anything to go by, he’s going to enter 2025-26 with so much confidence.

— Daily Faceoff (@DailyFaceoff) September 15, 2025 Dana Grey, the voice of the IceHogs, was in the “booth” this weekend in Minnesota and got to see the Blackhawks’ prospects up close and personal. He shared a couple nice clips of the Blackhawks’ pair of goaltenders who were on the trip making big saves. He’s right: the Blackhawks suddenly have really good depth between the pipes. Both Chicago goaltenders impressed this weekend in their first games wearing Hawks’ uniforms.Stanislav Berezhnoy vs. STL (31/33)Owen Flores vs. MIN (40/43)Goaltending depth seems real strong at all levels throughout the organization. pic.twitter.com/jz27y0MKvt
— Dana Grey (@DanaGrey0) September 15, 2025 Lauren Kelly at Elite Prospects wrote a terrific, in-depth preview of the OHL for the 2025-26 season. There’s a lot of Blackhawks prospects mentioned in there, from Jack Pridham opting to stay in the O with Kitchener instead of heading to Boston University to the possibility that Marek Vanacker, Parker Holmes and the Brantford Bulldogs win the title. We’ll see if Spellacy can help Windsor upset the league with Kitchener and London losing some talent to the pro ranks as well. Good read. The OHL's throne is up for grabs this season, and all eyes are on the Brantford Bulldogs ? — Detroit Red Wings (@DetroitRedWings) September 15, 2025 The third team celebrating their centennial season is the New York Rangers, who announced a series of special nights on their calendar. The list of games they’ll have unique celebrations sadly does not include the Chicago Blackhawks — the only Original Six team to not get one of those nights. That’s a shame.
