Good Question: When will Monroe County get license plate reader cameras?
false

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Soon, you’ll start seeing new cameras popping up at intersections across Monroe County. They’re called license plate reader cameras and they’re not meant to track your speed. They’re meant to monitor public safety, including catching car thieves.

It’s been a couple of months since the Monroe County Legislature voted to add more of them at intersections across the county. So, when will they be up and running? A viewer, John, asked: “The County approved funding for [MCSO License Plate Reader] cameras for FY 2025. What is the status of the project? Is there a date for implementation?”

The Town of Greece started using these cameras about a year ago. Since then, Greece Police say the cameras have contributed to at least 30 felony arrests. Greece Police shared the following examples of arrests made using the cameras:

September 3, 2025: A camera led to the recovery of a stolen 2020 Kia Sportage at Greece Ridge Mall; three 15-year-old juveniles from Rochester were arrested for criminal possession of stolen property and unauthorized use of a vehicle. September 1, 2025: An alert for a stolen 2007 Honda Civic from South Carolina on West Ridge Road; Matthew Ryan, 33, of Greece, arrested for criminal possession of stolen property, unauthorized use of a vehicle, and traffic violations. August 29, 2025: An alert at Greece Ridge Mall flagged a stolen 2025 Volkswagen Jetta from Webster; Dayshaun Wilson, 18, and a 17-year-old from Rochester were arrested for criminal possession of stolen property and unauthorized use of a vehicle. June 29, 2025: An alert for a vehicle stolen in a Rochester gunpoint robbery; three Rochester residents (in their 30s) arrested. May 18, 2025: A camera flagged a stolen 2025 Kia Sorento at a West Ridge Road gas station; Jason Field, 51, Nicole Stephan, 36, and Joshua Buzard, 37, were charged with criminal possession of stolen property and unauthorized use of a vehicle (Field also charged with drug possession). February 24, 2025: An alert for a wanted vehicle on West Ridge Road led to the discovery of an illegal handgun; Jalen Hannah, 22, from Irondequoit, was arrested for criminal possession of a weapon. February 1-2, 2025: A camera assisted in a chase of two stolen Hyundais on Dewey Avenue; three 16-year-old Rochester teens were arrested for criminal possession of stolen property and unauthorized use of a vehicle. January 23, 2025: An alert for a stolen vehicle from Canisteo on West Ridge Road; Brandie Morabito and Durune Hill Jr., both from Rochester, arrested. July 1, 2025: A camera spotted a stolen vehicle on West Ridge Road; Ricki Simmons, Tonet Simmons, and Daimonique Singleton were arrested. February 3, 2025 (follow-up arrests in April): A camera identified suspect vehicle in two violent home invasions; multiple arrests, including Sebastian Ortiz, 25, with recovery of a defaced handgun.

The Monroe County Legislature voted in May to install these license plate reader cameras at 50 locations across the county. You can see a list of locations here.

There are already 150 of them in Greece. Sergeant Brendan Hurley with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says deputies have received the necessary equipment, and installation of the cameras is in its initial phase. MCSO has successfully tested a few of the cameras. Now, they’re waiting on finalized permits before they can continue installing them. The project is moving forward with no official date yet for implementation.

Sergeant Hurley says he’s hopeful they’ll be done this year — but it will all depend on how long it takes for permit approval. MCSO says it will share more information about implementation when it becomes available.
