ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The trial of Taquida Hendrix, the woman accused of intentionally setting a house fire in Rochester that killed a 5-year-old boy, is set to enter day five on Tuesday.

Prosecutors say she worked with her sister, Tiakayla Hendrix, and her sister’s boyfriend to set the Portland Avenue home in July of 2024. Tiakayla Hendrix and Roy Chambers pleaded guilty to second-degree arson in August and Tiakayla took the stand against her sister on day four of the trial.

According to Tiakayla, the sisters were seeking revenge on people who beat up their father earlier in the day. Tiakayla said they targeted the duplex because they believed the attackers lived there, but set the fire on the wrong side, killing 5-year-old Malakai Stovall.

The fire started around 2 a.m. while Malakai was home with a babysitter. Firefighters pulled Malakai from the home but he was seriously injured and later died at the hospital. Taquida Hendrix is charged with murder and arson. The trial is expected to get underway at 9:30 a.m.
