Caleb Williams has failed to keep his promise to Tory Taylor.
The Chicago Bears quarterback is being dragged online after old comments have resurfaced of him telling the punter before he was drafted in 2024 that he won’t ‘punt too much here’.
Despite Williams’ flashes of brilliance, he is yet to return on the Bears’ investment in him when they drafted him with the No.1 pick in 2024.
Last season was erratic for both Williams and the Bears, and led to the mid-season firing of Matt Eberflus and a 5-12 record.
However, there was renewed optimism around the Bears heading into he 2025 season with former Detroit Lions OC Ben Johnson at the helm.
But even Johnson wasn’t able to hide frustration at Williams during their Week 1 collapse to the Minnesota Vikings.
Now, after their blowout loss to the Lions in Week 2, where Taylor had to punt four times, after punting six times against the Vikings, it’s Williams who’s catching yet more heat.
Mainly because Williams’ comment to Taylor from last year is going viral.
“Caleb [Williams] just texted me before saying ‘hey you’re not going to punt too much here,’ which is great,” Taylor said when he was drafted in 2024. “That was pretty funny.”
Of course this hasn’t turned out to be the case. In fact, Taylor has punted more times than would even imagined when he arrived in Chicago.
With ten punts already in two games this year, and 82 from 2024, Taylor has punted 92 times in total since the start of last season.
That puts the 28-year-old as the NFL leader for punts in that period.
And when you compare his punt yardage and Williams’ passing yardage, the stat is even more wild.

Ben Johnson says Williams is growing
Nevertheless, Johnson seems satisfied with his quarterback, if his comments after their 52-21 loss to the Lions are anything to go by.
Williams threw for 207 yards, two touchdown and an interception while completing 63.3 percent of his passes.
This marks the first time that Williams has thrown a touchdown on the offense’s opening possession in back-to-back weeks, something he did not do in his rookie season.
“I did see significant growth,” Johnson told reporters.
“It’s not perfect yet. There’s still a number of plays where our eyes aren’t quite in the right position or we’re holding onto the ball just a tick longer than what we’re coaching.
“But I did see tremendous growth in terms of going through the progression.
“There were a few times there where we had to get to No. 3 or 4 in the read and he was trusting his feet and his footwork and was able to get there.”
The Bears will look for their first win of the season when they take on the Dallas Cowboys, who enjoyed a thrilling win over the New York Giants in Week 2, on September 21.
