‘Fighting for his life’ – Fans express concern for ESPN broadcaster’s health after the NFL schedules a doubleheader with a late start

The NFL scheduled its first Monday Night Football doubleheader for Week 2 and it was a mixed bag.

In the first game, Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers scored a game-winning touchdown with six seconds left to defeat the Houston Texans, while the second game featured the Los Angeles Chargers traveling to take on the Las Vegas Raiders.

However, as soon as the second game began on ESPN/ABC, fans noticed a startling difference in broadcaster Chris Fowler’s usual stellar play-by-play voice.

As he welcomed in the audience at kickoff, it was clear that Fowler’s voice sounded tired, reflecting the nonstop schedule he had been working through.

After coming off a few weeks calling the biggest matches at the U.S. Open, Fowler quickly got into college football mode, calling ESPN’s biggest Saturday game.

This past weekend, Fowler called an instant classic — the Georgia-Tennessee game that went down to the wire in overtime.

Two days later, he was in Las Vegas calling the second game of the doubleheader and didn’t sound like his usual self. Fans noticed right away and expressed concern for the superb broadcaster.

“Chris Fowler is gonna be fighting for his life tonight, his voice is shot,” one fan commented on X.

“Can we give Chris Fowler a day off? I didn’t even realize it was him in the intro,” another fan chimed in.

“Chris Fowler sounds like he has strep throat,” one more added.

Fowler is seldom on the call for NFL games and only fills in on rare occasions. The MNF doubleheader is one of those times.

ESPN’s A-Team, Joe Buck and Troy Aikman, called the earlier Bucs-Texans game, while Fowler, Dan Orlovsky, and Louis Riddick handled the late game.

The game kicked off at 10 p.m. ET, a start time that fans were far from happy about.

“The Monday Night Football doubleheader is awful and ruins the MNF experience,” one fan wrote on X.

“Game on Monday night at 10 pm EDT? This isn’t Pac-10 after dark on Saturday night,” another fan joked.

“No reason not to just throw in another game into the 2nd window on Sundays. Like, not at all. Especially if you’re on the East Coast. Who is really trying to watch a 10 PM start on Monday,” one more complained.

The Athletic’s sports media reporter Andrew Marchand noted that this season would be the last for ESPN’s Monday Night Football doubleheaders.

“This is thankfully the last of the MNF doubleheaders. 7 pm is too early. 10 pm is too late,” Marchand wrote on X.
