USPS Just Opened Up This Incredibly Sweet Holiday Tradition For 2025—Here’s What to Know

When we think about Christmas, it typically conjures up images of presents under the tree, big family dinners and crowded stores with last-minute shoppers all trying to check that last loved one off of their gift list. It's a season that feels so magical for those with the means to create those idyllic memories, but for the less fortunate, it can make the hardships feel that much more pronounced.

Now in its 113th year, the United States Postal Service (USPS) is opening up Operation Santa to those who both want to submit holiday wishes for this year, and those who hope to fulfill them.

"For more than a century, USPS Operation Santa has brought communities together to make the holidays brighter," said Sheila Holman, USPS marketing vice president. "Each year, we receive far more letters than we have adopters, and this year we want to change that, especially by encouraging participants to adopt family letters, which makes it possible to fulfill the wishes of an entire household at once."

As of Sept. 15, Operation Santa is open for business. Both individuals and families can submit letters following the program guidelines available at USPSOperationSanta.com. In order to be considered for "adoption" under Operation Santa, letters must be postmarked by Dec. 6 to be eligible. And for the first time in 2025, participants now have the option to fulfill wishes from multiple people within a single household by adopting a family letter.

Last year the postal service introduced the USPS Operation Santa online gift catalog to make it easier to choose and send gifts to recipients of the program. And this year they say that the selection of gifts to choose from has been "significantly expanded" to include thousands of items.

When Can People Start 'Adopting' Wish Letters?

While those who would like to submit a wish can do so right now through Dec. 6, but registration for adopts doesn't begin until Nov. 3. That's when those who are interested i fulfilling these wishes can sign up and be ready to go on Nov. 17, when the actual letter adoption process begins. This is also when 'adopters' can start shopping and shipping from the USPS online catalog.

There's also the option to purchase gifts for your "adopted letter" on your own, and then ship through USPS. You'll receive a QR code with the information needed to send your gift (no personal addresses are released to adopters for safety reasons). Then, you just head to a USPS retail associate, show them the QR code and tell them you're there for Operation Santa. They'll ring up the price of the postage for your package, you'll pay, and then off it goes to make someone's holiday wish come true.
