JD Vance says ‘left-wing extremism’ partly to blame for Charlie Kirk killing

US Vice President JD Vance claimed that “left-wing extremism” was partly to blame for the death of Charlie Kirk while hosting the Conservative activist’s podcast.

Vance presented The Charlie Kirk Show from the White House in tribute to the 31-year-old, who was shot dead at an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.

Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old, has been arrested over the killing, though police are yet to determine a motive.

During an opening monologue, Vance, who was a close friend of Kirk, said “we have to make sure that the killer is brought to justice.”

He added: “We have to talk about this incredibly destructive movement of left-wing extremism that has grown up over the last few years.

“I believe is part of the reason why Charlie was killed by an assassin’s bullet.

“We’re going to talk about how to dismantle that and how to bring real unity that can only come when we tell the truth and everybody knows that they can speak their mind without being cut down by a murderer’s gun.”

Vance began a friendship with Kirk – founder of Turning Point USA, a nationwide Conservative student movement – nearly a decade ago. Kirk advocated for Vance to be Donald Trump’s choice for vice president last year.

Vance opened the two-hour live stream by saying he was “filling in for somebody who cannot be filled in for, but I’ll do my best.” Kirk’s podcast had around 500,000 monthly listeners and was downloaded more than 120 million times in 2024.

The killing has shaken a country that has experienced a spike in political violence, with Trump the subject of two assassination attempts last year, including one in which his ear was struck by a bullet.

Some Republicans, including Trump, have blamed liberal groups for Kirk’s murder despite a lack of evidence, while Democrats have noted that left-wing figures have also been the targets of political violence in recent years.

Robinson was arrested on Friday after being persuaded to hand himself in by his father, Utah Governor Spencer Cox said, but he has refused to cooperate with the authorities.

He is accused of aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, and felony discharge of a firearm, according to the BBC.

Earlier on Monday, the FBI released additional details about their investigation.

FBI Director Kash Patel told Fox News that DNA matching that of Robinson was found on a towel wrapped around the rifle believed to be the murder weapon.

Patel said that Robinson had told another person in a text message before the shooting that he planned to kill Kirk.

Investigators believe the suspect also wrote a physical note saying he had the “opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk” and would do so, Patel added. The note was destroyed, he said, but investigators collected forensic evidence that it had existed and confirmed its contents through interviews.

Separately, the Washington Post reported that Robinson had sent a message via the online platform Discord to friends apparently confessing to the crime.

“It was me at UVU yesterday. im sorry for all of this,” read a message from the account belonging to Robinson that was sent on Thursday night, shortly before he was arrested, the newspaper reported, citing two people familiar with the chat as well as screenshots it had obtained.

While Robinson was raised by religious parents in a deeply conservative region of the state, “his ideology was very different than his family,” Governor Cox said on Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press program, without going into specifics.

State records show Robinson had registered as a voter without choosing a political party affiliation and had not voted in the 2024 presidential election. But a relative told police that Robinson had grown more political and had expressed dislike for Kirk in a recent conversation.
