Caleb Williams Sends the Right Message After Week 2 Loss

I’ll admit that writing today felt like a slog.

And then I saw this clip from Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams and feel a little bit better.

Maybe it will help you, too, if the Week 2 beat-down in Motown has you feeling down:

    Words from Caleb Williams:

We’ve got 15 more games. It’s the first two games, and there’s been, on multiple occasions, teams that rallied back and go on a run, and that’s what we’re focused on. We all believe in each other. Coach said something extremely powerful to us after the game how much he believes in each and every one of us. Coaches included. And we believe in them.

For a coach to say that after the game that he still believes in us, and when it comes time, that it’s a big third-down on defense or it’s a big fourth-down on offense, that coach is going to go for it in the right situation. But the belief is there, the trust is there. We’ve got to keep chugging along and find ways to win the next game.

It is really easy to get bogged down in a bad game, especially in the NFL. When you play once a week, losses can stick with you for longer than you’d care to admit. But the beauty of the NFL is that you have all week to work out the kinks and prepare for the next game. It isn’t often in life when you get an extended period to work on your flaws and apply what you have learned shortly after, so you might as well take advantage of those opportunities when they come your way.

Caleb Williams and the Bears have a lot of work to do

Bears quarterback Caleb Williams posted this line in Week 2 against the Lions:

    19/30 (63.3%) 207 pass yards 2 TD 1 INT 91.9 passer rating

It wasn’t Caleb’s best game. And it won’t go down as his worst. Grading him is tough right now. Frankly, it feels silly to go week-to-week when it comes to grading him when the better way to evaluate QB1 is by examining a larger body of work — especially under first-year head coach Ben Johnson. To this point, I’ve seen more positives than negatives. But right now, the thing I want to see is Williams hold it together for a team that looks like it is fighting just to keep its head above water.

Leadership is an intangible. There are no stats or metrics that track leadership. But one way we can view it is through the lens of someone who says words, then backs them up with actions. Caleb Williams said the right things after Sunday’s loss to the Lions. And based on what the quarterback said, Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson is relaying the right message to his players. It might not mean much now, but building trust during tough times in September is something that could pay off in a big way later in the year. At least, I imagine that is what the Bears are thinking.

The next few days will be critical for Caleb Williams and the Bears. Not only do they need to flush this loss, but they also need to learn from it. And once the players and coaches are done with that, they need to come together to gear up for a Dallas Cowboys team that just put 40 points on the New York Giants. After watching the Giants put up 37 against the Cowboys, perhaps there is even more reason to believe that Chicago’s football team can do something similar. If it can, it will begin with the quarterback.
