BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Local lawmakers have called on the New York State government to help businesses struggling due to delays in work on the lift bridge in Brockport.
The bridge has been closed since 2024, with the opening date continuously getting pushed back. Originally it was supposed to reopen in September 2024. The latest update? The village website said in August the projected opening date is now November due to bridge clearance issues, iron worker shortages and a “critical positioning sensor” that needs a replacement and is expected to be delivered in October.

Local businesses and contractors have felt the effects of the closure, and now lawmakers are stepping in.
Republican County Legislator Jackie Smith wrote a letter to Gov. Kathy Hochul requesting that fines against the contractor be used for a relief fund for affected small businesses.
Smith said some businesses, like the Lift Bridge Bookstore, have seen sales drop by half while others have moved to mostly online sales to survive.

Since October 2024, New York has charged the contractor a $7,000 per-day fine. The bridge was originally scheduled to open in September of last year.
