Patrick Mahomes Defends Travis Kelce’s Dropped Catch After Chiefs Loss

Don't blame Travis Kelcefor the Kansas City Chiefs falling to 0-2. Though fans gave Taylor Swift's fiancé a lot of grief over a dropped pass (and the subsequent interception) during Sunday's 20-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Chiefs' quarterback Patrick Mahomes says the blame rests on his shoulders.

Mahomes, 29, and Kelce, 35, were busy trying to lead the Chiefs to a rebound victory when disaster struck. Kansas City was down 13-10 with 13 minutes left in the fourth quarter. The Chiefs were second-and-goal, on the 6-yard line, when Mahomes threw to Kelce, who could not hold onto the ball for the life of him.

Instead, it bobbled out of his hands and into the arms of Eagles defender Andrew Mukuba, who ran halfway down the field. A few plays after that interception, the Eagles scored, putting the defending Super Bowl Champions up 20-10.

Ultimately, Mahomes blamed himself for the blunder. "I think I threw it just a tad too early, just trying to put it on [Tavis's] body low before that hole player got there," said Mahomes in the Chiefs' postgame press conference, per CBS Sports. "I think if I can put it more on his body and not so far out in front of him, then he can catch it, take the hit and get in the end zone."

"You know, whenever you're in those tight quarters like that, you wanna get it to him, especially a bigger guy, more on his body where he can catch it and brace for that contact," added Patrick.

Coach Andy Reid also defended Kelce. "I'll take full responsibility for that game. Probably stayed too aggressive on that, and that's my responsibility," he said in the presser. "I probably could dial up some different things there. But I think against them, you've gotta do that."

Though Kelce's dropped pass left Chiefs fans seeing red, Travis had a decent showing. His four catches for 61 yards were the most for the team that game.

Chiefs Off To Worst NFL Start In Over A Decade

The Chiefs are now 0-2, their worst start since 2014. And they began the season on the wrong foot, falling to the Los Angeles Chargers during a special international game in São Paolo, Brazil. The 27-21 victory was the Chargers' first win over the Chiefs since 2021, snapping the team's seven-game losing streak against their AFC rivals.

The Chiefs are the heavy favorites going into their Sept. 21 match against the New York Giants. Russell Wilson and the Big Blue Wrecking Crew are also winless, coming off a 40-37 overtime loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
