Transitional Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa reaffirmed Syria’s support for Qatar in the face of Israeli attacks, stressing that “the strength of the Ummah lies in its unity, and its weakness in division.”
In a speech on Monday, September 15, carried by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) during the extraordinary Arab-Islamic summit in Doha convened to discuss the Israeli assault on Qatar, al-Sharaa said, “It is among history’s rarities that a mediator is killed, and among precedents that a go-between is targeted,” referring to Qatar’s regional mediation efforts.
He added that Israel continues its assaults on Gaza alongside its strikes on Syria for the past nine months, stressing that unity is the path to strength. He cited a verse of poetry:
When the wise heart, the sharp sword, and the noble spirit gather, injustice will avoid you.
Al-Sharaa concluded his speech by affirming that Syria, “people and leadership,” stands with Qatar, calling it “a loyalty to her and to the justice of her position.”
The extraordinary Arab-Islamic summit
The emergency Arab-Islamic summit opened in Doha on Monday morning with wide participation from Arab and Muslim leaders to address the repercussions of last week’s Israeli attack on Qatar, which sparked regional outrage.
The summit followed preparatory meetings of Arab and Muslim foreign ministers that produced a draft final communiqué expected to be issued at the end of the summit.
The statement expresses unified Arab and Islamic solidarity with Qatar in “confronting the aggression” and stresses the need for collective measures to deter Israeli violations.
Israeli strike targets Qatar
On September 9, the Israeli army targeted the Hamas negotiation delegation in Doha.
In a statement posted on X, the army said the operation was carried out with the Shin Bet internal security agency, using precision munitions and additional intelligence.
It claimed the targeted Hamas leaders had long directed the group’s activities and bore direct responsibility for the October 7, 2023, attack, as well as managing the ongoing war against Israel.
According to Israel’s Channel 7, the strike hit a meeting of Hamas leaders in Doha, where they were discussing a ceasefire proposal presented by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Trump had issued what he called a “final warning” to Hamas on September 7 to accept a deal for releasing Israeli hostages and halting the war in Gaza.
Israeli media reported that the operation, dubbed “Summit of Fire,” was conducted by fighter jets.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry condemned what it described as a “cowardly attack” on the residences of Hamas political bureau members in Doha, calling it a “criminal assault, a violation of international law, and a grave threat to the safety of Qataris and residents.”
The ministry stressed that Qatar “will not tolerate reckless Israeli behavior” or any action targeting its security and sovereignty, adding that investigations are underway at the highest levels and further details will be announced once available.
According to Alaraby TV, Hamas’s negotiation team survived the Israeli assassination attempt.
The Israeli army insisted in its statement that the targeted leaders were responsible for directing “Operation al-Aqsa Flood” and vowed that, alongside Shin Bet, it would continue to act “resolutely” until Hamas was eliminated.
