Founding Motley Crue Member Accuses Former Bandmate of Betrayal

Out of all the hard rock bands to climb the charts in the '80s, it could be said that Mötley Crüe most embodies the era's spirit of debauchery. Now, decades later, the group has seemingly cleaned up their act...but there's still plenty of drama going on between past and present members.

In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, founding member and bass player Nikki Sixx responded to former Mötley Crüe guitarist Mick Mars' claims that the band has been relying on backing tracks for years.

“Anything we enhance the shows with, we actually played,” he said. “If there are background vocals with my background vocals, and we have background singers to make it sound more like the record. That does not mean we’re not singing.”

Sixx went on to call Mars' allegations a "crazy betrayal."

“Saying he played in a band that didn’t play, it’s a betrayal to the band who saved his life,” he said, adding, “People say things like, ‘Well, if you guys are really playing, then I need isolated tracks from band rehearsal.’ … It’s ludicrous.”

In a statement shared with the same outlet, Mötley Crüe's attorney, Sasha Frid, backed up Sixx's counterclaims.

“The fact of the matter is that Motley always plays live,” Frid wrote. “Even Mars’ expert witness in the litigation, who Mars hired and who reviewed hours of footage, agreed and said that the band played live while performing. He disputed Mars’ own claims.”

In 2022, Mars announced that he wouldn't be touring anymore due to his battle with the degenerative disease Ankylosing Spondylitis. Less than a day later, Mötley Crüe released a statement that he was leaving the band altogether, leading to a public battle resulting in Mars suing his former bandmates in Los Angeles Superior Court.

What did Mick Mars say about Mötley Crüe?

In a 2023 interview with Variety, Mars complained about the treatment he's received from his onetime collaborators, saying he "carried those bastards for years."

"Those guys have been hammering on me since ’87, trying to replace me," he said. "They haven’t been able to do that, because I’m the guitar player. I helped form this band. It’s my name I came up with, my ideas, my money that I had from a backer to start this band. It wouldn’t have gone anywhere."

"The thing that they keep pushing, for many years, is that I have a bad memory," Mars continued. "And that’s full-blown, out-of-proportion crap. Around 2012, when they first started saying that my memory was bad and I didn’t remember the songs, I came home and saw all my doctors, because I keep myself together, because I’m an old bastard. They had all the 10th Street people there [from the band’s management] — probably about five or six people — (versus) all my doctors going: 'There’s nothing wrong with him.' And now they’re still playing that game with me."

Despite losing Mars (and lead singer Vince Neil's recent stroke), Mötley Crüe carries on. The band kicked off a residency in Las Vegas this month.
