Strong Starts, a Kantserov Goal, Knight’s New Deal, Spellacy, Greene, Lardis, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Like the Bears’ defense, Oliver Moore, Sam Rinzel and Artyom Levshunov got the afternoon off on Sunday. (Sorry… too soon?) That wasn’t a huge surprise; the Blackhawks sat Connor Bedard out of the second game a couple years ago. Here’s what Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson said about Rinzel and Levshunov getting off to a strong start on Saturday during the second intermission last night:

    — BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) September 14, 2025 Ryan Greene wore the “C” for the Blackhawks yesterday and, of course, he scored the first goal. I thought he had a nice weekend. His first period on Sunday wasn’t great (a few turnovers in not-ideal locations) but he was much better in the final 40 minutes. He looked more comfortable in a supporting role on Saturday evening than driving the top line on Sunday. Which is fine. His shot was a surprise for some because he ripped it and people who watched him at BU saw him defer more times than he let it fly. Maybe he got the same memo about finishing that Moore did? AJ Spellacy had a terrific weekend. He looked good in both games. It might read/sound weird, but I saw more “hockey player” from Spellacy this weekend that I did at times last year. He’s one of the guys who committed fully to hockey later, so his upward trajectory is something to watch. And I was impressed with how he played in both games. He did leave the second game after two periods, however. Thankfully, IceHogs head coach Jared Nightingale said he wasn’t hurt much. Nightingale also liked what he saw from Spellacy:

Jared Nightingale on AJ Spellacy: “He seems like he’s flying everywhere. He played to his strength: tough to play against… Those power forwards are hard to come by.”He didn’t play the third period just due to precautionary reasons.

    — Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) September 14, 2025 After the game on Saturday night, Moore told the media the play that won the game in overtime was drawn up during the break by Nick Lardis. He said it’s something Lardis pulled off in junior a few times last year, so they went with it. It worked. Love to see the players’ input getting used already by the coaching staff — especially young guys in the prospect showcase environment. Moore finishing the play in overtime on Saturday night was a great sign. That’s been the biggest area of his game that’s been questioned during his development thus far. Good read here from Ben Pope on how closing the deal could take Moore’s game to another level as a pro.

Oliver Moore has almost everything you'd want in an NHL forward. His future Blackhawks role will likely come down to one thing: his finishing. If he can fix that weakness, he looks like a top-six weapon.New story: t.co/wTb3tFdqwM

    — Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) September 15, 2025 Blackhawks prospect Roman Kantserov had a goal (below) and an assist on Sunday in his KHL game.

    — ХК «Металлург» (@MetallurgMgn) September 14, 2025 As of 8:00 AM CT on Monday, still nothing to report on Wyatt Kaiser. Aaron Portzline of The Athletic reported last week that Columbus forward Yegor Chinakhov has not backed away his trade request. Something to keep an eye on as training camps start to open around the league this week. Staying in Columbus, the Flyers dumped some salary on Sunday morning, trading goaltender Ivan Fedotov — and all of his $3.275M cap hit — to the Blue Jackets for a sixth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. David Pagnotta at The Fourth Period reported “there’s a sizeable gap between the Nashville Predators and restricted free agent forward Luke Evangelista. The two sides have continued to talk, but I’m told there is frustration from the player’s end. This likely ends up in a bridge deal, but the main issue has been AAV.” We don’t know the substance of the investigation yet, but Pagnotta reported on Sunday that the NHL started investigating something regarding Mitch Love this summer while he was interviewing for head coaching vacancies around the league. He was placed on leave by the Capitals on Sunday.

Washington Capitals assistant coach Mitch Love has been placed on team-imposed leave pending results of an investigation by the National Hockey League. We will refrain from further comment until the NHL’s investigation is complete.
