CAIRO, Sept 13 (MENA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty said increasing recognition of an independent Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, is the only path to achieving security and stability for all peoples of the region.
Abdelatty made the remarks during a phone call on Saturday with UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper.
Congratulating Cooper on assuming her new position as foreign secretary, Abdelatty stressed the importance of intensifying joint efforts to promote bilateral relations in various political, economic, commercial, and investment domains to serve mutual interests.
During the call, Egypt’s top diplomat reviewed developments in the Gaza Strip, especially the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the war-ravaged enclave.
He reaffirmed Egypt’s categorical rejection of Israel’s ongoing crimes and genocide, its obstruction of relief and medical aid, as well as its policy of displacing Palestinian people from their land.
Abdelatty said the international community is responsible for putting an end to these blatant practices, which require effective intervention to stop the Israeli war on Gaza and end the policy of starvation against innocent civilians.
He commended some Western countries, including the UK, for declaring their intention to recognize the Palestinian state on the margins the 80th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 80), taking place in New York from September 10 to 24.
Reviewing the latest developments in the Iranian nuclear issue, Abdelatty briefed his British counterpart on Egypt’s efforts that led to the Cairo agreement between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency to resume technical cooperation.
He said Egypt’s recent intensive diplomatic efforts sought to de-escalate tensions and create enabling conditions for resuming negotiations between the two sides, highlighting the importance of giving diplomacy a chance to restore confidence to create an environment conducive to regional security and stability.
