The Primetime Emmys are back, and thankfully back to normal after airing two separate ceremonies during 2024. In January 2024, the first Primetime Emmy Awards of the year were doled out, but those were actually the awards meant to be presented in 2023. Due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, the 2023 Emmys were bumped from their September 2023 date to January 2024. Then a second Emmys (the actual 2024 Emmys) aired in September 2024.
Now, thankfully we're back on schedule with the 2025 Emmy Awards, which honors TV that aired between June 1, 2024 and May 31, 2025. While the Emmys are always slightly confusing (this ceremony will be honoring Season 3 of The Bear from last summer and not the season that just aired), they are at least back to their usual date and time.
All that aside, the evening, hosted by Nate Bargatze, included impassioned winner speeches, entertaining jokes and jaw-dropping red carpet looks. Of course, there were also plenty of weird, wild and unexpected things that happened as well.
Here’s a rundown of all the evening’s biggest, most memorable moments:
The highs, lows and wildest moments that happened at the 2025 Primetime Emmy Awards

— Variety (@Variety) September 15, 2025High: Nate Bargatze opens with a "Washington's Dream" spinoff featuring the Saturday Night Live cast
In a bit of a surprising move given that this year's Emmys are on CBS, host Nate Bargatze opened the show with a sketch based on his viral Saturday Night Live skit "Washington's Dream." Bargatze played the inventor of television Philo T. Farnsworth, who told three of his assistants, played by SNL stars Mikey Day, Bowen Yang and James Austin Johnson about what television would look like in 100 years. The skit poked fun at streaming, the History Channel and The Bear.
Stephen Colbert received a standing ovation at the #EMMYs“While I have your attention, is anyone hiring?” pic.twitter.com/AR1DOfLY78
— Film Updates (@FilmUpdates) September 15, 2025After The Late Show With Stephen Colbert was canceled earlier this year, the television community has rallied around Colbert. He got the plum spot as the first presenter of the evening, presenting Best Actor in a Comedy to Seth Rogen. As Colbert took the stage, résumé in hand, he earned a standing ovation.

Whoa: Nate Bargatze threatens to take money from the Boys & Girls Club of America if speeches go long
In recent years, we've seen plenty of wacky gimmicks enforced to keep speeches short. This year, Bargatze opened the show saying that he would donate $100,000 to the Boys & Girls Club of America, but would subtract $1,000 from the total for every second a winner went over their 45-second mark. He would also add $1,000 for every second under the 45-second limit. While funny in theory, it does seem a bit tactless, especially as the amount of money kept dropping throughout the evening.
Whoa: Every member of The White Lotus cast loses
In a shocking twist, all seven actors nominated for their work in The White Lotus loses after dominating the supporting actor/actress in a drama categories. The Pitt's Katherine LaNasa beat out Carrie Coon, Parker Posey, Natasha Rothwell and Aimee Lou Wood while Severance's Tramell Tillman nabbed the trophy over Walton Goggins, Jason Isaacs and Sam Rockwell.

— Film Updates (@FilmUpdates) September 15, 2025Fourth times a charm for Hannah Einbinder, who lost the Emmy Award for the first three seasons of Hacks before finally winning for Season 4. Einbinder gave an impassioned and off-the-cuff speech that ended with "Go Birds, f--k ICE, and free Palestine," which was bleeped on the telecast.
High: Sterling K. Brown on a scooter
Obsessed with Sterling scooting onto the stage to present. He looks like he's having a blast.
I love, love, love how supportive Bowen Yang and Michael Urie were for Jeff Hiller when his name was called for the Emmy instead of theirs pic.twitter.com/Z7nOXaz6gG
— Spencer Althouse (@SpencerAlthouse) September 15, 2025In a shocking upset, Jeff Hiller, the sole nominee from Somebody Somewhere managed to win over actors in juggernauts like The Studio, The Bear, Shrinking and SNL. Hiller gave a moving speech shouting out the show's star Bridget Everett.
Low: A male director beats out five women in Best Directing in a Limited Series
In a rather unfortunate bit of timing, Elizabeth Banks, who was presenting the category highlighted the fact that five women were nominated in this category, an extremely rare occurrence in an industry dominated by men. However, it was the one man nominated, Philip Barantini for Adolescence, who took home the trophy.
Whoa: Slow Horses beats out The White Lotus, Severance and The Pitt for Best Directing
As the 2025 Emmys pressed on, the surprise winners kept stacking up. After several years of sweeps, it was refreshing to see nominees like Slow Horses director Adam Randall take home the trophy over juggernaut shows like The Pitt, Severance and The White Lotus.

— Film Updates (@FilmUpdates) September 15, 2025Whoa: 15-year-old Owen Cooper wins an Emmy
We haven't seen a kid take home a trophy at a high-profile awards show in years, so it was a bit of a thrill to see the Adolescence star deliver a heartfelt thank you.
Kathryn Hahn and Ike Barinholtz present the award for Limited or Anthology Series or Movie Writing at the 77th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards pic.twitter.com/CYrYT5Hkop
— Kathryn Hahn Online | Fansite (@KathrynHahnFans) September 15, 2025While the winners of the evening were unexpected, the comedy was largely lacking. Barinholtz and Hahn proved why The Studio is one of the funniest shows on TV. The pair delivered a comedic bit in which they tried to prove how useless writers are by presenting without the teleprompter.
Low: Nate Bargatze stumbling over his words
While Bargatze is a very talented comedian, presenting doesn't quite seem to be his strong suit. He stumbled over his words repeatedly throughout the night and didn't manage to land as many jokes as one would have hoped.
lol I love Cristin Milioti so much. this was such a cute Emmys speech"I wrote this speech on the back of notes I took in therapy the other day. so don’t look at the back!" pic.twitter.com/VMzk7a4ChM
— Spencer Althouse (@SpencerAlthouse) September 15, 2025High: Cristin Milioti's primal scream
We love when a winner is actually excited about it, and when The Penguin actor won, she delivered an impassioned speech followed by one incredible scream.

verrrrry cool that the Emmys just did a segment about how congress voted to defund the CPB so they could talk about how important public broadcasting is"We know that culture doesn't come from the top down. It rises from the bottom up. Culture belongs to the people. We need to… pic.twitter.com/24QwqEuXIa
— Spencer Althouse (@SpencerAlthouse) September 15, 2025High: The Corporation for Public Broadcasting speaking truth to power
Earlier this year, congress voted to defund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the non-profit organization that sponsors PBS and NPR channels. CPB was awarded a Governors Award from the Television Academy at the Creative Arts Emmys, but in recognition of CPB's work, Cris Abrego gave an extremely well-crafted speech illustrating just how powerful television can be. "We know that culture doesn't come from the top down. It rises from the bottom up," he said to cheers.
aw the entire Emmys audience just chanted Stephen Colbert's name after he won the Emmy for Outstanding Talk Series pic.twitter.com/7CgJfwO6kA
— Spencer Althouse (@SpencerAlthouse) September 15, 2025No win was more deserved and received a more exuberant response from the audience than whenStephen Colbert won the Emmy for Best Talk Series. After his show was canceled, even his competitors began campaigning for him, taking a stand and making a statement about the importance of political humor. He received his second standing ovation of the night after the winner was announced.
High: Brad Garrett steals the show
If you had to guess which comedian would deliver the funniest bit of the night, you probably wouldn't have guessed Everybody Loves Raymond star Brad Garrett, but the actor returned 20 years after winning an Emmy with the funniest bit of the evening. Maybe we let him host next year?
Thanking studio executives is always a bit snoozy for the audience, but it seemed a bit in poor taste to list a whole bunch while the Boys & Girls Club of America donation clock ticked past a negative $50,000 deficit.
High: $350,000 Boys & Girls Club of America donation
Even though the count at the end of the evening was well below zero dollars, Bargatze promised to donate $250,000 along with another $100,000 from CBS for a grand total of $350,000.
Low: No one thanked Sal Saperstein
