Lions 52, Bears 21: A Motown Beatdown

Do you think Ben Johnson is wondering what he got himself into by signing on to be the Chicago Bears head coach?

It was a demoralizing loss for the Bears in Week 2 against the Detroit Lions. Chicago’s football team was competitive for about 29 minutes. But the wheels fell off late in the first half, then the whole thing fell apart after halftime. This was as disgusted as I’ve felt after a Bears game in a while.

Thoughts on the Bears Week 2 loss

My biggest takeaway from two weeks of Bears football is that this is a pretty damning look for Bears General Manager Ryan Poles, whose summertime extension looks highly questionable two weeks into this season. If he thought that his team was a head coaching change away from leaving the NFC North cellar, then the first two weeks of the 2025 NFL season should change his opinion. A new coach can only change so much in one offseason. Don’t get me wrong. Hiring a quality executive chef is the right move, but he can do only so much with the ingredients at his disposal. I’m imagining Ben Johnson asking what he got himself into cooking in this kitchen. I was hoping that players from last year’s team — particularly on the defensive side of the ball — would come out with a chip on their shoulders to start the 2025 campaign. But it does not look like that is the case. It feels early to be questioning the effort of players. However, watching that game is going to bring those questions to light. That we are already questioning effort and wondering about “quit” is problematic on so many levels. If that unit doesn’t have any answers in Week 3, the whispers won’t quiet down.

CHICAGO BEARS WEEK 2 INSTANT PLAYER GRADES

The offense being slow out of the gate was to be expected. If you look at the early portion of Ben Johnson’s time as the Lions’ offensive coordinator, then you might have tempered your optimism — especially after how things went in Week 1. But a defense that was so excited to rid itself of Matt Eberflus last year is still playing the uninspired brand of football that came before *AND* Eberflus’ firing. There aren’t major moves that can be made right now, but an offseason teardown could be on the horizon if this pace keeps up. I’m so tired of watching the flag icon light up on score bugs. Procedural penalties were a problem during training camp and the preseason, so it is no surprise that they are still an issue two weeks into the regular season. The beat writers warned us in the summer. We saw it play out in exhibition games. MLB teams have kangaroo courts for stupid, unforced errors, with player fines going to end-of-year parties. If the Bears had such a thing, they’d be making enough bank to throw a banquet that would make a king blush.

    Three Bears

D’Andre Swift — The Bears’ top running back finished with 63 rushing yards on 12 carries. Swift averaged 53. yards per carry and scored a touchdown. He also fumbled when Chicago’s offense was marching down the field. The fumble didn’t directly lead to points, but it was a demoralizing moment and a waste of a possession. Swift’s runs have been too hit-and-miss this season for me to feel any positive vibes after his performance.

Drew Dalman and Jonah Jackson — There was a point in the first half when the only Bears offensive lineman who didn’t have a penalty called on him was left guard Joe Thuney. The Dalman and Jackson penalties were annoying as heck, and they represented a continued problem that has been hovering since the summer and continues to pop up well into the regular season. The penalty issues aren’t going away. And that is a problem that needs immediate addressing. I just don’t know how it gets fixed when so much of it is self-discipline.

CHICAGO BEARS INJURY UPDATE: Jaylon Johnson Suffered a Groin Injury

Cairo Santos — In what was an inauspicious start, Santos booted the ball out of bounds on the opening kickoff. The Lions immediately went on the march to score an opening-drive touchdown. Other than that, Santos was mostly unnoticeable. He didn’t attempt any field goals, but he hit all three of his extra points. Considering the team’s issues elsewhere, whatever happens with the kicker position is a footnote and can be moved to the back-burner until further notice.

WHAT’S NEXT: Week 3 vs. the Dallas Cowboys, Sept. 21 on FOX.

The Bears host the Cowboys next week, which means that Matt Eberflus comes to town for a grudge match against his former employer. I need Ben Johnson’s offense to run Eberflus and his defense out of Soldier Field the way that I need oxygen to breathe. But I also need the defense to show up and provide some sort of resistance to quarterback Dak Prescott, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, and the rest of the Dallas offense. I’d love nothing more than to spend my Sunday next week making sad Jerry Jones as Emperor Palpatine mashup photoshops. However, the Bears have so many problems right now that I don’t know if I can extract joy from memes.
